A Movie For All Ages
Date of Review: Dec 26, 1999
Princess Mononoke is not just for kids. It is a movie that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. First of all, it has an incredible story of the everlasting battle between man and nature. The movie touches on environmental issues that can be applicable today. In this regard, the movie really moved me because it depicted how mankind is destroying the earth through their selfish desires. It offers an opportunity to look at both sides of the story. It is not idealistic by trying to pretend that these problems can just go away. Anyone that enjoys movies that make us look deeper within ourselves and the surroundings around us will love this movie.
The visuals are just astounding. It felt so much more vibrant and beautiful than any of the cartoons by Disney or Warner Brothers. The animation is at such a greater level.
This is by far the second best anime movie that I have seen. The other one was the "Graves of the Fireflies" which is the most emotionally gut-wrenching movie that I have seen in a long time. The effect it left on me was immense. Graves of the Fireflies was an enriching but simple story. Yet it was still able to provide such an incredible effect. Princess Mononoke is a more intricate story but it still produces a lasting impression.
