The wonderful people at Disney have outdone themselves again in one more dazzling Princess movie to add to their ever-growing list. The new G-rated Family Comedy, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, is now playing in theaters everywhere.
This charming film begins with Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) at age 21, having graduated college and in the middle of moving to Genovia where she will learn how to rule when her grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Julie Andrews)passes the crown to Mia. However, when there is an effort to sabotage her ascent to the throne, Mia finds that the only way to secure her place as future Queen is to enter into an arranged marriage. All through this, Queen Clarisse and her head of security, Joe (Hector Elizondo) continue the
romance that had begun to blossom at the end of the first movie.
Hijinks ensue including many arrows hitting things other then their targets, mattresses being surfed by princesses from all around the world, and a very interesting
fall into a water fountain. Throw into the mix that Julie Andrews graces us with a song and the return of Paolo the stylist and hairdresser (Larry Miller), and we've got a bunch of family fun on our hands!
When I went to see this movie, it was because I was taking my friend out to cheer the both of us up. This movie did the trick! My friend an I forgot our troubles for a couple of hours when we watched this film. When Queen Clarisse informed Mia that she had "done a lot of flying in her day", and then proceeded to sail smoothly down a slide
while standing on top of a mattress, I thought it was hilarious! I also loved all of Mia's attempts at archery while trying to prepare for the traditional shooting through the fire hoop. She missed the target so many times, I was surprised everyone on the castle grounds didn't try wearing helmets and arrow-proof vests. Another of my favorite scenes was when Mia fell into the water fountain with the very person who was trying to steal the crown from her.
While I personally loved the first segment of The Princess Diaries, I found myself falling even harder for it's sequel. The dynamic cast had incredible chemistry and director Gary Marshall did a fantastic job. The beautiful sets of the castle, the gardens, and many other are spectacular. This movie is hilarious and clean, a mix that is very hard to find these days. If your looking for a movie the whole family will enjoy, look no further. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is the movie for you!
