Author's Review
I have seen the Princess Bride more times than I can remember, having first seen it in Junior High in the Theaters, then on video with dates, and now with my own children on a rainy afternoon. This movie has everything- comedy, love, triumph, and failures. All of them lead to the dreamy idea of wide-eyed girls of princes saving them, and sealing it with none other than that perfect kiss. Let me take you on an Adventure of a lifetime, and let me prove to you why this should be in YOUR video library!
First off, this movie has an incredible cast of talented Actors and Actresses. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce them to you.
Prince Wesley and the Dread Pirate Roberts is Cary Elwes, also known from Twister and Robin Hood Men in Tights.
The Beautiful Buttercup, our Princess, is played by Robin Wright.
Our fiesty Spaniard is played by Mandy Patinkin, who went on to a Law Series on television.
Our loveable, and now deceased, Giant named Fezzik, was played by Andre the Giant, also known as a famous Wrestler.
Next we have the brainy and hilarious Wallace Shawn, who has also starred in Clueless and both Toy Story films as the loveable Dinosaur, Rex.
The evil Prince Humperdink is played by Chris Sarandon, anyone know if he is related to Susan?
The Six-fingered man, who is Indigo's rival, is Count Rugen, played by Christopher Guest.
Special Appearances were made by Peter Falk, who was the Grandfather, a young Fred Savage, who plays the sick boy, Billy Crystal who plays Miracle Max, along with his witchy wife, played by Carol Kane and Peter Cook, who plays the hilarious lispy Clergyman.
Now that we have the cast in check, let's get on with the review of the movie!
The Plot
The plot is about a sick child whose Grandfather decides to read him a story, which is where the Princess Bride comes in. A love story through out, it also expresses the meaning of friendships, loss, betrayal and vengeance. Our beloved couple fares through swamps, fights large rodents, and battles for love, even after death. The plot is upbeat and fresh, and will keep you on the edge of your seat to see what happens next.
Comedy
This movie has the kind of comedy that you can hear and see over and over again, and still continue to laugh each and every time. The jokes are easy to understand and are far from being vulgar or political.
Sex?
There is none, nor is there any exposing of any questionable body part.
Violence
I will say that there is some mild violence involving sword fights and some blood as well. It is brief and not in the least disgusting, such as Saving Private Ryan or the Patriot.
Questionable Language
I have seen this movie a dozen times or more, and the only phrase that is muttered once is "Son of a B." It is when Indigo fights with Count Rugen, so be prepared for it if you are watching with children.
I hope this review has helped you decide on whether to take part in viewing this wonderful and fun film. I highly recommend it for you and your family on a Friday night with a big bowl of buttered popcorn. Enjoy!
