Author's Review
As a fan of Jane Austen's book "Pride and Prejudice",
I was always waiting for a good movie of it, since it
would make for a great movie. I was glad to know about
this 1995 version and couldn't wait to watch it on
tv. I was glad that it was 6 episodes long since
I can't get enough of a great thing. I was more amazed
to find that this was the first movie I ever saw that
did justice to a book. In fact, I loved it more than
the book!
The story takes place i the 1800's. Elizabeth Bennet (played by Jennifer Ehle) comes from a middle class
family (they're not rich) and is the second of five sisters. Their mother's wish is to see all of her
daughters married.
Her eldest sister, Jane Bennet, is the prettiest of
them and attracts the attention of a rich man, Mr.
Bingley who has just arrived at their neighborhood.
They soon find out that Mr. Bingley's friend, Mr. Darcy
(played by Colin Firth), is richer than he is, but soon find him to be too proud.
The story revolves on Mr. Darcy falling in love with Elizabeth Bennet and asks for her hand, which she
refuses at first. It's all about pride and prejudice
from both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Mr. Darcy being too proud and prejudice of people who are not rich and
Elizabeth being to proud to accept Mr. Darcy's offer in marriage after she got the impression that he is too
proud and disagreeable, and also the impression that
he was too cruel to his old friend, Mr. Wickham, who
was Mr. Darcy's father's godson.
However, we later learn that first impressions are not
always true and not to believe everything you hear unless you are 100 percent sure of it's truth.
I loved the movie and all the events in it. Colin Firth
did a great job playing the proud and tall Mr. Darcy. He didn't do much talking but his features and looks were enough to make you understand what he was feeling and his
gazes were priceless as he watched Elizabeth Bennet with admiration and love in many scenes.
All the actors in the movie acted their parts so perfectly
contributing to the success of the movie. No matter how
much times I watch this movie, it grows more and more on me. I can't seem to get enough of it. I've practically
memorized most of the movie lines. Even my family, who never agree on any movie i like, love watching it over and over with me! Even my mother who never gets interested in any movie!
My favorite scenes are the funny dancing scenes between Elizabeth and Mr. Collin. I have to crack up whenever I see the part Mr. Collins makes a wrong dance move. I also love the dancing scene between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. It was played so perfectly.
Here are some of my favorite lines:
* "She is tolerable I suppose, but not handsome enough to
tempt me"_Mr. Darcy about Elizabeth Bennet
* "My good opinion once lost is lost forever"_Mr.
Darcy to Elizabeth Bennet.
* "You are mistaken, Mr. Darcy, if you suppose that the
mode of your declaration affected me in any other way
than as it spared me the concern which I might have
felt in refusing you, had you behaved in a more
gentlemanlike manner"_Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy.
* "You could have not made me the offer of your hand in
any possible way that would have tempted me to accept
it"_Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy.
* "He is a gentleman; I am a gentleman's daughter; so far
we are equal"_Elizabeth to Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
Here's a helpful website about the movie which also includes scripts of parts that were cut from the movie
and a funny article about how to tell if you're addicted
to the movie:
