Author's Review
I enjoy watching Julia Roberts. That is what originally attracted me to this movie. I cannot even remember how many times I have seen Pretty Woman. It is one of those Movies I can recite the lines before they are even said. One I can watch over and over and over again, and never get bored.
This is a movie of following your hearts and dreams. Sometimes that may not be very easy. It takes some definite planning and hard work. And lots of heart! This movie has just that, Heart!
This story takes place in Hollywood California~What's your dream?
This is a story of a girl following her heart and "bums." That is what brings Julia Roberts "Vivian" to California. She says she "followed bum #3." Well, she finds herself alone when the bum leaves and she looks for work. Along the way, she finds herself not being able to pay the rent and finds "Kit Deluca," (cant remember her real name) and finds the trade of Prostitution. She finds it pays the rent and feeds her body, but not her soul.
Well, one night, while Vivian is working, along comes "Edward" Richard Gere, looking for directions to his hotel he is to stay at. A rich man who has somehow lost his way in every way possible. He is in a job he isn't happy with, dealing with demons he won't share with the world. And, Very lonely. He buys companies, tears them apart, uses them and then sells them. He is not happy doing this. He wants to build things.
He accepts Vivian's offer to show him to his hotel for $20. What choice does he have, he is lost:)
They arrive at the hotel and he offers her $3000 to be at his "beck and call" for a week. He states he wants a professional. She accepts, and the story begins. We go through them being complete strangers to each other, to falling in love. The more they are together, the more the chemistry grows between them. This is a story of how Vivian and Edward's life change due to each other. She shows him things are not always as they appear and he shows her anything is possible.
This movie also shows the stereo types, the cruelty of people against others that aren't as "lucky" as they. An example. Edward gives Vivian some money to buy a dress. She calls her friend Kit up and Kit suggests Rodeo Drive. So, off Vivian goes to buy some clothes. The first store she goes in, she sees this very nice dress. She asks the ladies in the store how much the dress is. The ladies tell her it won't fit her and that it is VERY EXPENSIVE~ they then proceed to tell her to "Please Leave." Vivian leaves, feeling ashamed, and very degraded as she realizes this isn't quite the way she pictured it. She later meets "Stucky"~Edwards Lawyer, but I wont ruin that part for you~
Vivian runs into other areas where she isn't accepted, but it is amazing what money can do to an image. With money and new clothes, Vivian blossoms into another person, a LADY! (At least to everyone else's eyes~we already know she is a lady, she just can't afford to be for appearances sake) Over the course of the movie, the ones who looked down upon her, now think she is intriguing, and beautiful.
This movie is a wonderful "fairy tale" ~a movie of following your dreams, and your heart. It shows you can find love in the weirdest places and when you least expect it. It shows not everything is as it seems. If you like movies like that, then this one might be for you. You can almost feel the emotions the characters experience.
This movie is rated R, definitely not for kids~ Watch this one when those kiddo's are in bed. If you happen to like the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, another movie to consider is Runaway Bride. Another cute movie~not quite the sexual content that Pretty Woman has though. And other Julia Roberts movies, My Best Friends Wedding, The Conspiracy Theory to name just a few. She is a great actress. I don't think I have seen a bad movie with her in it, yet. I don't think:)
