Author's Review
Pretty Boy Floyd was written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. This is the story of famed bank robber and killer Charles Floyd. Floyd earned the nickname Pretty Boy, which he hated, from his good looks and love of women and fine things such as clothing and cars.
Born in 1904, Floyd was married by the time he was 17 to a girl who was 16 years of age. The novel starts in 1925. Floyd, tired of not having any money, decides to rob his employer, Kroger Grocery, with the aid of a friend. This would be the start of a nine year crime spree where Charles "Pretty Boy" Floyd would be accused of every crime occurring in Ohio, Oklahoma and Missouri even the ones he had not committed. In between crimes he would hide out in Oklahoma living with his wife or two prostitutes that he loved. He was well protected by the people of Oklahoma who knew him. Floyd is portrayed as never wanting to hurt anyone and only shooting when he was shot at first. He is portrayed as a man loved by several women one who is shot during a shoot out but she survives.
The novel, Pretty Boy Floyd, also covers his death in 1934 but does not go into the controversy surrounding his death. His funeral was attended by what is estimated to been about 30,000 thousand people.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I will say that some people may not find this book as good as as some of Larry McMurtry's books such as Lonesome Dove. However, Pretty Boy Floyd is a pretty good story about the life and times of Charles Floyd and I think Larry McMurtry fans will enjoy this book.
