Author's Review
I received this product as a Christmas gift last year. I never got around to using it because my husband joined the military and we have been moving a lot. I finally brought this out about 2 weeks ago, and I am ADDICTED!!!! Sure, fried foods might not be as healthy as baked or steamed, but WHO CARES?!?!?! This appliance has made me stop counting calories and start enjoying all those craving that I have when I am pregnant! I can finally say that I have gained 3 pounds in my pregnancy and it is almost over! Yeah!
The appliance itself is about a foot tall and approximately 8 inches around. I am able to put 3 large potatos, cut up into home fries into it with no problem. I plug it into the wall, give it about 10 minutes to heat up, put in my food, and wa-lah! 10 minutes later, I have the best tasting, freshest, and hottest fried foods that money can buy! And, since I get it at the grocery store, not some fast food chain, it's cheaper and healthier. Who could ask for more?! I pay about $2.50 for a 10 pound bag of potatos, and my family has a fried side dish for about 2 weeks.
There is a fill line on the inside of the GranPappy, telling you exactly how much oil is recommended. I have not over-filled, so I can not tell you what the consequences of not following directions are, but I do know that when I put in my fries, the oil comes up to about 2 inches below the top, which is probably plenty! The fries always cook evenly, and you can cook them as long as you want. The longer your fries or onion rings are in there, the crispier they are.
This also comes with a small recipe book with some great batter recipes. I have compared them with my own and replaced 2 of mine! It also has a curved, slotted spatula for easy grabbing of whatever food you are cooking in the GranPappy. I have yet to misuse the spatula, and have never been burned by accidently dipping my hand or splattering grease. There is a lid so you may cover your unused oil for later use.
One thing that you may not think of when you have this however is mixing veggies and meats. If you are using your granpappy to cook chicken, and then you want to make french fries the next day, please change the grease first. You can get very sick if you do not. If you are making both on the same night and do so often, I recommend buying a separate appliance and marking one with tape on the handle so you know the difference. That is the only drawback that I can think of however. The capacity of the GranPappy is about 4-5 cups of oil, and then be sure not to over-fill with food to prevent spilling. Add your food gradually and judge it yourself. I have had very good luck with this. Another safety precaution: PLEASE! make sure you break a fry in half to test the inner temperature before giving them to your children! Too many kids find out about burns the hard way. Fries tend to cool on the outside and stay VERY hot on the inside!!!! And be sure to keep the GranPappy pushed back on the counter to prevent small hands from grabbing that big bucket of hot oil! An accident of that magnitude could cause permanent damage to your child. Again, you be the judge!
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes the occasional fried endulgence! Take care!
