An Odd Romance

I admit it, I am just now seeing this movie. Prelude To A Kiss was in the theaters in 1992 but I never had the opportunity to see it. While at a video store with a good friend I came across the movie and she recommended that I see it. She stated it was one of the most romantic movies she had ever seen. Now that I have watched the movie I just can't agree with that statement. It was somewhat romantic but it was also very weird and unrealistic. I feel that it is important to have some measure of realism in order to express true romance. The movie wasn't horrible but ti also was not a great romance. For some reason Sci fi meets young lovers and old man just doesn't work out to be a good romance.

The acting in the movie was above average but the plot couldn't be carried by good acting alone. Alec Baldwin is wonderful in his role as a man who fallls in love, gets married, and then deals with his anguish as he sees the girl he loved become someone else. Meg Ryan plays the girl who he is in love with. They get married right away and all seems perfect until an elderly man shows up at their wedding reception and kisses the bride. Somehow they trade bodies. When his new bride doesn't seem to be herself Baldwin's character begins to figure things out. His only desire is to have his wife back in her own body but the old man has other plans.

I guess the part that is supposed to make this movie seem romantic is the fact that Baldwin's character stays with his wife even when she is in a man's body because he loves her so much but that concept isn't what you are thinking about while he is in a loving scene with an old man.

The movie had an even more unbelievable ending as the two realize they can just switch back if they want it bad enough. This movie made for a very odd fairy tale romance.
