Author's Review
Practical Magic, released in 1998 by Warner Brothers, is the story of two sisters, Sally and Gillian Owens, who are witches. This is a comedy-drama about the love lives of all the Owens women throughout history, and the curse that follows each of them.
Sally Owens is perfectly portrayed by Sandra Bullock, as the conservative, straight laced, "normal" sister. She does not believe in abusing her witchcraft for spells involving love or revenge on others. Sandra Bullock, who is a great actress, nails this part. Her honesty and good nature comes through and she is very genuine.
Nicole Kidman is incredible as the sexy vixen, Gillian Owens. Gillian is the wild sister, who falls in love with many men, and runs away to escape the small town so she can experience a more exciting life. Nicole's portrayal of Gillian is smooth, seductive and alluring. She brings to life a character that you don't know whether to love or hate for the problems that she creates for her sister.
The mix of the two opposite personalities blend into a story that is quite "bewitching". The sisters find themselves in a serious predicament after Sally tries to rescue Gillian from one of her bad love relationships. With the town always against them, the two are faced with a "grave" dilemma, involving the law and an angry, unsettled spirit.
Watch this movie to find out about the curse that plagues the Owens women, and how Gillian's sour relationship stirs up so much trouble for the sisters. What do they do next? The movie holds all the answers.
Practical Magic was directed by Griffin Dunne, who is also an actor. He starred in My Girl and An American Werewolf in London, among other film credits. His creativity as a director shined, in my opinion, in this movie as he set the tone for this story. The camera shots, the way the story was put together, and the way the actors played off of one another was a credit to his directing abilities.
The soundtrack to the movie is also excellent and includes music from Stevie Nicks, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye and Faith Hill to name only a few.
In summary, this is a wonderful film to view during the Halloween season, or at any time during the year. This DVD is a favorite at my house, and I whole heartedly recommend it. However, put your little ones to bed first, because this is rated PG-13 due to some of the sensual material, as well as some violence. Watch and enjoy!
Thanks for reading!
