Product Review

You Can Drive a Porsche or You Can Drive a Volkswagon

by   jkerm ,   Apr 12, 2006

Pros:  Durability, body style, accessories

Cons:  the cost of having one repaired

The Bottom Line:  Oh YEAH! There is no car that handles like a Porsche....a mechanically sound car.....I could go on & on!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars
Handling And Control: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I miss my Porsche. This was the second one we owned. For the nine years we owned the car, it was only in the shop twice. Granted, it is expensive when they need to go to the car doctor, but all those years when it was healthy and didn't have to go....we saved a bundle.

What makes a Porsche such a great car?

1. Everyone noticed it. The high resolution body never needed painting, never dulled, never looked a day older than when it was new.

2. Sleek Design....the car never looked a day older than when we bought it.
It sat low & cool. The sun roof was a little difficult to operate as it was all done manually. The hatchback design made the car look like something that should be launched and it drove like it had been. Once my daughter was riding shotgun. She was about 15 and some teenage boys in the car next to us tried to get her attention. When the light turned green, THEY ATE MY DUST!

3. Gas mileage.....we got great gas mileage and it was a turbo...5 on the floor......instant 0 to 50, but it still got great gas mileage....Did I mention it didn't look 1 day older than the day we bought it?

4.Image....everyone thought we were rich....we weren't....but it sure looked that way....people were nicer to us when we pulled up in our Porsche than when we got out of the mini van.....A LOT NICER TO US.....Which brings me to this question....WHY ARE PEOPLE NICER TO RICH PEOPLE THAN SAY MIDDLE CLASS OR POOR ONES?

5. Comfort....black leather seats, sun roof, console with a phone, great German radio and tape player (they didn't have disc players back then. The bucket seats sort of enveloped and cushioned your butt. So that driving long distances was easier on the back.

6. Driveability....oh, how it hugged the highway! You glided across traffic, could outrun just about anything on the road (even though we NEVER drove it that fast...but could have) The car sat low and we knew it wouldn't flip easily. It made one feel secure.

7. I wish I could spout all kinds of technical terms concerning the engine...what can I say? It was shiny. But that's the point....the engine never seemed to age. A mechanic who looked at the engine couldn't believe it was a nine year old car.

WHY DON'T WE HAVE ONE NOW IF IT IS SUCH A GREAT CAR?

1. Teenagers ready to get a driver's license
2. Special insurance...hard to find for a sports car much less a turbo
3. After 9, yes 9 years, it was going to need some work and that's expensive. The clutch alone was going to cost about $1700.00 and it required 60 mechanic's hours.
But it didn't look 1 day older than the day we bought it.

THEY'RE EXPENSIVE AREN'T THEY?
Yes! New ones are. But often times if you watch the paper or go to a dealer you can get very good prices on used ones. Just be sure to have a mechanic check it out. My personal experience has been positive. Very few mechanical problems.

CONCLUSION

You can drive a volkswagon or you can drive a Porsche....I would really rather have a Porsche!

Just a quick note...the guy who bought the car races cars and he called on three different occasions to tell us how much he loved the car!
