"Squeaky Clean"

Pros:  lyrical masterpiece, sweeeet sounds

Cons:  Hmmmmmm, can't think of any

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

It is apparent that Bono's intellect encompasses the disciplines of religion, philosophy, and life. The "squeaky clean" lyric in Discotheque is a comment of Larry Mullin's (the drummer.) It is reflective of U2's distaste for religious conformity, barrier, and war. Underneath the "smokescreen" that Dennis Hopper commented on in his televised critique of the album, exists a band that just can't let go of it's "serious" demeanor. And ya know, I would never want them to either. They have experienced much in the confines of their lives in Ireland. --What they have to say should be heard. A squeaky clean is one who "numbs" their lives with religious admiration. They often aspire to the depths of conflict by their own metaphysic structures. In the song "Please" Bono's lyrics suggest as much. "Your Catholic blues. Your stick on tattoos, now they're making the news. Your holy war. Your Northern Star. Your sermon on the mount from the boot of your car."
Look, if you're into depth and harmonious tunes then you won't find better artists than U2. U2 is on the threshold of musical genius, if they aren't already. "Pop" is no exception to their talents. The album is a pillar addition to any music collection. And hey, if you don't like the record's PHAT sounds you can get your moneys worth with the poetic justice of Bono's lyrics alone. Don't be a "squeaky clean," buy the album.
