Looking for the Baby Jesus Under the Trash

by   divad23 , top reviewer in Music at Epinions.com ,  May 11, 2003
Pros: Juicy electronic-influenced rock music coupled with gripping (and sometimes haunting) lyrics.
Cons: The occasional awkward lyric; conservative Christian listeners will be offended.
The Bottom Line: It's different, it's dangerous, it's controversial, and it hits really close to home. Meet U2 at the top of their game.
Review: Ladies and gentlemen, here it is. My favorite U2 album. No, really. Okay, I know it sounds preposterous. After all, I'm the guy who likes an inordinate number of happy, well-adjusted Christian rock bands. So why, instead of any of a ...

Bono's Brave New World

by   Divine_Cheese ,  Sep 19, 2002
Pros: Techno! Techno good! Stonking tunes! Stonking tunes good!
Cons: Miami - trip-hop bad...
The Bottom Line: A perfect mix of techno-boffin U2, stadium rocking U2, politically charged U2 and, er, drug anthem U2. Pop is an album you should own and love.
Review: There are two types of people in our strange, messed up excuse for a world - those who love U2 and those who are yet to admit that they love U2.

Of those that love U2, there are also two types - the type who accept that Pop is an...

It's up with the sun.

by   hawkbee ,  Mar 16, 2003
Pros: One of U2's strongest albums ever (out of 10 strong albums they've put out).
Cons: "Gone" is not as great as it could've been (and is, on the Best Of).
The Bottom Line: It really needs 6 or 7 stars. And if you don't own and love this, don't call yourself a U2 fan. (Okay... well, I like that description.)
Review: Here is it: The one known as U2's "bomb." The one that just didn't make the cut. The first of the "crap albums." And if you're agreeing with these statements, skip to the bottom, click the "Not Helpful" icon, and move on. But if you don't... ...

Electronic Summit

by   ColinP ,  Mar 11, 2000
Pros: Great sonic and lyrical landscapes
Cons: One or two throwaway tracks
Review: It must have been a strange situtation for U2 going into the recording for "Pop." I'm sure there was a great deal of interest in what they would do next, after the creative explosion of "Achtung Baby" and the electronic direction of...

"Squeaky Clean"

by   p00psniffer ,  Jan 10, 2000
Pros: lyrical masterpiece, sweeeet sounds
Cons: Hmmmmmm, can't think of any
Review: It is apparent that Bono's intellect encompasses the disciplines of religion, philosophy, and life. The "squeaky clean" lyric in Discotheque is a comment of Larry Mullin's (the drummer.) It is reflective of U2's distaste for religious...

Pop is not bad at all

by   verovenus ,  Jul 30, 2001
Pros: A great change for the band, great tunes if you listen closely
Cons: Some "classic U2" fans might get lost in the change.
The Bottom Line: Don't be fooled by the critics, this is a great album.
Review: I remember back in 1997 when I bought this album, many critics dismissed this album as bad, but in truth, this album has much to offer... I bought the album anyway despite all the critics.
U2 did not get lost in superficiality, but it the lack of...

PoP Rocks!

by   u2dan ,  Feb 6, 2001
Pros: Great Music, Different styles
Cons: ehhh?
The Bottom Line: I reccomend to anyone who enjoys all of the music of U2.
Review: I read along and wonder why PoP only has 4.5 star rating. I really really enjoyed this album just as much as the others. Discotheque and Do You Feel Loved have great beats as well as MoFo. If I was to write this opinion back when "Staring at the Sun" was...

Simply a Masterpiece

by   ksnap118 ,  Dec 4, 1999
Pros: Beautiful lyrics, emotional ups and downs, excellent music
Cons: none!
Review: U2's latet album is one of their most powerful. With beautiful songs like "Gone", "Staring at the Sun", "If God Will Send His Angels", "Please", "If You Wear That Velvet Dress" and countless others it is...

Please....

by   charbono ,  May 8, 2000
Pros: Mind-blowing lyrics, as always
Cons: bit of a downer
Review: This is an amazing album - starts off fun, just like Achtung, but ends up depressing you by the end (also just like Achtung) and taking you on an emotional journey in between. Discotheque is of course the "fun" bit - camp, tongue-in-cheek -...

U2 makes a U-Turn with Pop

by   lambchops , lead in Music at Epinions.com ,  May 9, 2002
Pros: An extension of the electronic sound of Zooropa, great songs
Cons: Miami, Gone, Discotheque, etc...
The Bottom Line: Maybe not an album for less adventurous souls, Pop is nonetheless an impressive musical attempt from U2.
Review: Pop proves that even the commonly believed worst U2 studio album is better than the best Backstreet Boys pseudo-attempt at music.

Critics and fans alike had problems accepting U2’s new direction on Pop....
