Pros:  This thing screams with a 3.4L DOHC

Cons:  None really, other than excessive wheelspin

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I own a 1989 Pontiac 6000. I bought the car from a steel mill with 145,000 miles on the odometer in 1997.I only paid $100 for it and it was in decent shape with little rust. I drove it with only standard wear and tear(brakes, tires, etc.) until January of 2000.
One day in January I was coming home from work and the car began to overheat. I knew the engine was due to break at sometime as now it had 205,000 miles. I looked under the hood to find bubbles running through the cooling system. Prior experience told me that these bubbles were caused by a bad head gasket or a cracked engine block. It took me my spare time over the next month to break down the engine to find it had a cracked block.
So it was time for a new engine. I though about another 2.8L V6, but it was not a very high horsepower motor. I finally decided I wanted a 3.4L DOHC motor from either a Lumina Z34 or an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. By a twist of fate, my one buddy had a badly abused 1992 Lumina Z34 and it was involved in a major accident. I purchased the car for $200 with a barely running motor. I in turn had to take the whole computer out of the Lumina with the motor and transmission. I had the whole Lumina motor and trans rebuilt for $1400 dollars. My dad helped me to fabricate in the core support, engine mounting, transmission mounting, and the four-wheel disc brakes from the Lumina as well.
After a complete sand down and repaint of midnight blue on the Pontiac with 4 layers of clearcoat, I had a Midas shop custom make me a dual-stainless steel exhaust system for the Pontiac. The heads were reworked, and many high-performance parts were fitted. When all was said and done, I spent $5500 dollars turning my aging 6000 to a awesome looking street sleeper. The interior has also been redone with custom seat inserts and custom pod gauges. I now have a 6000 with 250 dynoed horsepower and I can run with the new Pontiac Grand Prix GTP's. My car attracts lots of attention because it is not a car seen as being something cool. I love my 6000. I wish I could show pictures but I don't have a scanner.
