Pokemon gold: not a big catch

Date of Review: Dec 10, 2001

The Bottom Line:  Just if you have a long wait or a long plane ride and nothing to do.
Pokemon gold like all of the pokemon games isn?t all bad. Everyone says how childish it is and you either love them or hate them. I disagree with both statements. Yes, the game might be geared toward younger audiences but that doesn?t mean us older folks can?t use it and enjoy it.

To me Pokemon is in a way like the Final Fantasy series except for game boy. It seems that with kids? ages 9-13 Pokemon is considered not ?cool?. Really though you are a boy who is collecting some rare and some not rare creatures while trying to collect the eight trainer badges. Now please tell me that it isn?t just like that in Final Fantasy. You are a boy (a little older) who is going through a fantasy type world. In Final Fantasy 8 you are also trying to move up in the ?seed? ranking. The two are very similar.

Graphics: What can I say? It?s a gameboy game. How good can the graphics get? It is like the other games. A little color, pixely, boxy graphics but high quality for a game boy game.

Sound: All the sound is annoying music. When in battle the music changes a little more up-tempo. There aren?t any sound effects and the people don?t talk. I find this part of the game rather annoying. Who really listens to sound on their game boy anyway?

Pokemon is the type of game where everything about the game is really bad except for the storyline. I think the story line is good for all ages and the reason that everyone ?hates? Pokemon is because of the reverse forbidden fruit effect.

The game takes place in a far off land with many different towns and cities. The land is inhabited with small creatures named Pokemon. You are a boy and your goal in life is to collect all the pokemon in the world and record them (pretty sad huh?). On you quest you meet other trainers and have to battle them. You also have an arch rival (Gary) who is always tough to beat and it rather cocky. On your journey you also must stop the evil Team Rocket and their plans to take over the world.

I give this game a six out of ten points only for the above average storyline.
