Product Review

Good machine, OK software

by   surfdog4 ,   May 15, 2005

Pros:  Video capture is easy to use, lots of quality choices

Cons:  DVD creation is S..L..0..W

The Bottom Line:  for a few transfers, consider paying the $20 per tape for someone else to do it..otherwise i think this is a good video capture device

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I purchased the M402U after returning an AV100U..the AV100 had some horrible buzzing sound on everything I tried to record...apparently it's internal conversion scheme was more than my processor could handle (which surprised me since it's a new 64-bit machine)

Anyway, i bought this like most folks i guess to convert home movies on tape to DVD. For that job, the video capture part is straightforward and easy to use..the trick comes when you want to edit the footage, add chapter marks, and burn the DVD.

Since I was totally new to video editing, I think i was a fair trial for the bundled software that comes with the machine..the documentation is poor and the software is not really intuitive..you have to dedicate some time to figure it out. You can eventually though.

The real surprise for me came when you go to "make" the file that will get burned on the DVD..it takes real time or even slower to create the file..so a 2 hour DVD will take 2 hours or MORE to create..which when faced with a dozen or so 2 hour VHS tapes in the closet makes the task daunting and discouraging.

I don't know how this compares to other video capture devices, but in reading reviews I did not pick up that any of these boxes are without their problems..
