Author's Review
A few months ago my husband and I were getting ready to pack up our four year old son, three year old daughter and my in-laws in our minivan and travel eight hours to visit relatives in another state for a long weekend. One of the things necessary for this trip was some music that would keep the children happy, but yet, not be grating on the adults' nerves. The answer? Disney, of course!
We first played Playhouse Disney - Original TV Soundtrack on our "big trip" (as our children call it) and it was a hit from the beginning. From that time, it has remained in the car and gets requested every few days.
There are 26 songs on this CD, from six different shows that air on the Disney Channel:
From the show Bear in the Big Blue House:
1. We're All Different - a song that explains that its okay to be different from others and to try new things.
2. Dancing The Day Away - a "get up and dance" type of song that encourages the kids to move around (even in carseats, my children dance a bit!)
3. You Will Find Your Way - although you can lose things like your train of thought or a toy, you can always find your way back to where you belong.
4. It's Great To Be At Home - Bear sings about your "home sweet home" is the "perfect place to be" since that is where your favorite things are.
5. Let The Rhythm Take You - Pip and Pop (two purple Otters) sing lead in this song (with some assistance from Bear himself)about the rhythm and grooves of music.
From the show The Book of Pooh:
6. Everyone Knows He's Winnie The Pooh - the theme song from the show. All of Pooh's friends help with the vocals, but only Pooh is mentioned by name.
7. Mental Altitude - Tigger, with some help from Piglet, sings this song about confidence in yourself. "If you have no stripes, no need to run and hide, You can still be the type of guy who wears his stripes inside."
8. Your Best Wishes - in this song Pooh is sad because he thinks that he used up all of his best wishes and none have come true. Piglet makes him understand that the best part of a wish might just be the joy that you want it to bring.
9. Who Is Me - a very silly song about Pooh meeting himself to share in all the fun things that Poohs like to do.
10. Find The 'X' - a song about finding the "X that marks the spot" no matter how long it takes or where it takes them.
11. Goodbye For Now - the closing song for the show. All of the characters sing about saying "goodbye for now" but invites us to come back again next time.
From the show PB&J Otter:
12. Oodelay-O - the opening song for the show, it is mostly silly words, but very catchy!
13. Bubble-O Popple-O - Peanut and Jelly Otter wonder how life would be if they could talk with the fish.
14. Noodle Dance - is the dance that Jelly Otter always suggests doing when they need to figure out a problem. Her brother, Peanut, usually rejects the idea at first, but then joins in. "Solve a problem, its no strain! Use your noodle, that's your brain!"
15. Friends - a nice song about friendship. Even though we are all different, we can all be friends through the ups and downs.
16. Go Slow, You Know - Peanut and Jelly sing about taking it easy and not always being in a rush to do things: "Kick back, Relax and let yourself go with the flow."
From the show Out of the Box:
17. Out Of The Box - theme song for the show. The premise is that Tony and Vivian took some old boxes and were able to make a rather large playhouse out of them because they were thinking "Out of the Box!"
18. You Can Do It - positive reinforcement for the old addage that if you try, you can do it.
19. You Never Know- a song about not giving up on your dreams because "You Never Know" what you can do.
20.Listen To The Rhythm- Tony begins different vocal rhythms and the others repeat after him.
21. Until We Meet Again- the closing song for the show. Like most of the ending songs for children's songs today, they say goodbye, but they invite us to come back again.
From the show Rolie Polie Olie:
22. Rolie Polie Olie - theme song for the show. It is about Olie himself and states that "in the land of curves and curls, he's the swellest kid around"
23. Totally Chocolate Dinner- a fun song from one of the episodes where the kids and parents changed places. Of course one of the things that the kids had was a "Totally Chocolate Dinner"
24. The Twirl- a 1950's style song where we are invited to "Whirl to the Twirl", whether we are round or square. It reminds me somewhat of "The Twist", but on a much simpler level.
From the show Stanley:
25. My Man Stanley - the theme song for the show. It gives us a little bit of background about Stanley - that he is friendly, his best friend is a goldfish, and that he befriends all animals.
26. The Great Big Book Of Everything - Stanley has a "Great Big Book of Everything" which is a dictionary/encyclopedia of sorts where he looks up information about different animals and things that he encounters. This song is sung by Elsie and Harry, who are of course, Stanley's cat and dog.
I like the fact that the songs are grouped by show, so that if my children decide they want to skip Winnie the Pooh one day, it is easy to just go ahead to the next segment. As frequent Playhouse Disney viewers, most, if not all of the songs were familiar before we purchased this CD, and by now we have seen all of the songs performed on television.
I would recommend the Playhouse Disney - Original TV Soundtrack to any child, even if he or she is not a Playhouse Disney viewer. The fun songs, many of which teach lessons, will be popular with everyone.
