I bought the Pioneer DVL-919 because the local library has a huge collection of Laserdiscs. Of course, the DVD and CD section of the player is what I use most!
I got a huge markdown to $550 because it was the last one they had and they were getting out of laserdiscs. You should be able to find one on the Internet for $800.
First of all, this is a LARGE player - make sure you have room for it.
Second, make sure you have lots of time because you will be using it a LOT!
Build quality is excellent. The internal electronics and motor drives are top notch. The 96/24 DACs are as good as you can get so you can choose to use them or your A/V receiver's. The casing is plastic as has become typical but if you don't move it too much it will hold up fine.
This is a combi player, so it will play virtually all laser media - laserdiscs, cds, dvds.
1. Laserdiscs play well and with minimum motor noise. This is a dual side playing machine so you don't have to get up to flip your disc. Picture clarity and sound are excellent.
2. CDs sound great but with an analytical edge. Maybe this an accuracy thing with the high level DACs. Try using the decoding of your A/V receiver to compare the sound.
3. DVD play is terrific. No problems with layer switches on anything I have run through it. Dolby Digital and DTS both play with great sound separation and dynamics.
This player has composite video and both S-Video and component video outs, so if you are using one of the high end TVs or projector systems you will be pleased. I only use the S-Video and get a great picture.
The remote is very convenient. I prefer the smaller size and the functional layout is intuitive. One improvement would be if it were able to light up for better use in the dark.
I don't know if Pioneer will make any more laserdisc players but if you need the triple capability you won't go wrong with this one.
