Author's Review
I do pizza delivery and cable instalation and has had 5 different gps systems for the jobs, I have to say this is the best one. However there are some flaws. Some features that I really like are:
-buttons: I've noticed that most gps want to have lots of buttons on screen because it's easier and cheaper than building physical buttons. This has 2 buttons to go through menus A LOT faster than other gps. Also a physical volume scroll. These make it so that you don't have to go through menus and submeus and subsubmenus to find what you want to change. You can just push one button. The others really sucked when you need to change sound control constantly and had to go through all that. The nice screen buttons work great also. They are huge. Most gps puts tiny number buttons and letter buttons on the same entry screen. Avic-s1 one does one first then the other so the buttons can be much bigger. Lots of tiny buttons next to each other is hard to push the one you want and be very frustrating when hitting the wrong one then trying to hit backspace.
-Screen display: My fav. The screen is very very very clean and simple. Your route is highlighted perfect with everything very clear. You can see streets perfect and colors work great. It displays lakes and rivers perfect. Other devices I've had has so many things on the screen at once that you barely see the map. Some things you don't even use. You can even decide which things to remove from the map display. The s2 model has a color scheme. Horrible idea because everything looks the same color. The streets are not fill with color either in the s2 making them very hard to see.
-Works while driving: this can be an unsafe thing for a lot of people, but for me, it's a good thing. Some gps wont allow you to push anything until the car is at a complete stop. Which is very stupid because if you do push something, a popup will tell you to drive safe and you would have to push "OK" before anything would work again. I am constantly on the run and use the gps while moving slowly.
-Quick Suggestions: This is a huge plus. if you type in a city or street, a list will popup right away while you are typing and the list changes as you type more characters. This is a great feature exlusive to this device of the ones I had. You don't have to type the entire name then click search like most gps. The updated avic-s2 doesn't even have this feature.
-Very user friedly: this isn't jampacked with a lot of features that you will never need to use. Straight forward on function. Searching requires the minimum amount of typing. hit search, type city (click from suggestion list), street (lists also), number (lists also) then it starts from there. Other gps will have you got to search button and any other weird buttons, city (individual character-i.c.), street (i.c.), number(i.c.), map, go to...before it actually routes.
-Fast auto-reroute: miss your turn? it give new route right away. Other gps will have to reload and block screen with "reroute loading...".
-Sound: It doesn't beep before every direction is givin. The voice does not tell you useless info. And kinda sexy.
CONS
-Annoying messages: 1)if battery is low, a popup will block the entire screen with you having to push exit and it will continue to do that until you charge. I would like a light in the corner light up or something like that. 2)If there is a new map, it will constantly ask you if you want to update. 3)Very annoying part is when you have to push ok EVERYTIME you startup or power on from sleep mode.
-Confused similar streets: Very big con. if you are searching a common street (like 5th st), it will give you a list of choices to choose from. Choices that are displayed on the list EXACTLY the same (Did you want 1690 5th st, 1690 5th st, or 1690 5th st?) They are in completely different places but no distinctive information on each one is shown. One can be in the city you are searching, and the others will be in the bordering cities. I would like to see something like "1690 5th st, Downtown Chicago; 1690 5th st, Lansing; 1690 5th st, East side Chicago"
-Speed: not a big deal. it loads each entry page kinda slow. Type in city, street, number. takes about 4 seconds loading in between each. The smart suggestions makes up time for it though. I'm just saying it would be nice to load faster. Powering on at startup is VERY SLOW. About 5 minuites to start up. So just leave it on sleep at all time.
-No voice control: not expected but would be nice. But of coures, this is a first generation beginners.
-Reliable?: I went on a far trip and found it going nuts. It displayed my car going through buildins and blocks and doing spins and teleporting. In certain areas, it will do this, very rare to find a spot though (I found 2). I freaked out and alomst stomped it.
