Author's Review
Many folks recall this film from their youth. Some know of it because of "When You Wish Upon a Star". Others look it as a relic of a byegone era.
Some of the computer animated films these days are quite good. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, and Over the Hedge come to mind. However, some of the computerized films and many of the animated ones, especially some of Disney's recent efforts, have failed to capture the excellence of this film.
Keep in mind this was made in 1940. It's nowhere close to being new. However, the animation is excellent--and hand-drawn, too! But what really matters is the plot of the film itself.
All too often folks think movies can be made better today by adding pop culture references, bathroom jokes, and sexual innuendos. At the same time, they water down the plot to incorporate these elements, and often films, animated or not, lack moral qualities.
This film, and others similar to it, is what movies should be like. You get a clean film free of litter. Lessons are taught when Pinocchio turns into a donkey, watches his nose grow, etc. While some of these things may be a bit scary for the youngest, this is a good thing--if it scares you enough you just might take warning--don't lie, don't fall into temptation, etc.
The characters are well-developed. Some complain about the length of this movie, but it goes to show who everyone is. You don't just get acquainted with the folks like you do in some newer movies, you get to know them.
Also, the music is excellent. Cliff Edwards, who voices Jiminy Cricket, is excellent on vocals.
Verdict: Watch it with your kids if they're young or easily frightened, but make sure your kids see this masterpiece.
