Ambiguously and Mysteriously Moody

I saw this film when I was a kid, prior to becoming a professional musician, and now as an adult.

I remember as a kid watching scenes of them playing among the ruins as being a great synergistic combination of technology and art: here are these guys playing what amounts to non-commercial essentially instrumental music in a rather surreal setting.

I remember all of the panned close ups of the array of their gear, which for a kid (and probably some adults as well) conjures up all sorts of pseudo-Christmas like feelings of "look at all of that NEAT stuff!". Obviously the Beastie Boys felt the same way, as they basically spoofed scenes from this movie in one of their videos...

The way each segment cuts away into another is interesting. The use of a stark Switzerland Inserat typeface for lettering of song titles, placed boldly onscreen ala _2001: A Space Odyssey_ increases the mysterious mood. Which of course compliments Pink Floyd's music greatly...

This was my favorite period of the band, and I think Gilmour's guitar playing was the highly of this documentation. All the accolades that seems to accompany Eric Clapton seem to fit Gilmour better in my estimation, as evidenced by his slow but tasteful and emotive playing in this film.

Any real fan of Pink Floyd should watch this... anyone who tends to like techology should as well, since the film captures the notion of the creative use of (70's) music technology. Musicians should find it interesting, since this period Floyd tended to have a more improvisational aspect. Nick Mason dropping a stick in the heat of playing and continuing on apparently unaffected is amusing unto itself...
