Author's Review
I am one of those people that can rarely make it out of bed until I get that hot cup of java in my hands the very first thing in the morning. My Philips Senseo fresh brew single cup coffee maker provides me with an incredible cup of coffee, freshly brewed in just thirty seconds.
It is capable of making one cup, two cups or one larger mug at a time. The coffee has a rich flavor, with a frothy topping which is better than any other coffee I have had.
My husband is generally up at five in the morning, and I generally don't get going until seven or so, so this machine is a natural. No more stale coffee sitting in the coffee pot until I get up. I just pop in the pod, and turn on the machine, and I have a fresh, frothy cup of coffee in thirty seconds!
Design
Its sleek and futuristic design was the first thing that attracted it to me . Tall and slender, its back section holds the easy-to-fill water reservoir, which holds enough water for about four or five small cups of coffee. It easily slips out to fill. This piece has a splash guard reservoir to keep water from spilling out while making the coffee. The cover lifts up to reveal the coffee pod holder , which comes in two sizes, one for a regular one cup pod, and one a little deeper which holds two pods for two cups, or holds the newer cappuccino pods, which are a little thicker. The machine pushes the coffee up from the reservoir, over the coffee pod, and directly into the cup, providing the freshest, frothiest coffee I have ever had at home.
The Pods
The pods come in several different blends, My husband and I prefer the dark blend pods, which we then jazz up with a tiny bit of dark, unsweetened cocoa, along with some sugar and a drop of milk. Its rich flavor reminds me of the coffee we have been served in fine coffee shops when on vacation.
Flavors
Dark Roast
Medium Roast
Decaffeinated Blend
French Vanilla Caramel
Kenya Blend
Brazil Blend
Colombia Blend
Sumatra Blend
Cappuccino Blend
We have tried the dark roast, medium roast, decaffeinated
blend, cappuccino and the French vanilla caramel. We found the medium roast a little too weak for our taste, the decaffeinated had little flavor, and the French vanilla caramel a little too sweet for our taste. We like the cappuccino blend, but we use this extra thick pod with the setting for one cup, not the recommended two cups, so that it has a richer flavor. It was a little too weak and milky-tasting for us with the recommended two cups of water.
Our hands-down favorite is the original rich-tasting dark roast.
Cost of the Coffee Pods
We order our coffee pods from Amazon.com. The eighteen-count bags come packaged in boxes of four bags each and sells for $18.56. I order four boxes at a time, so that I qualify for free shipping and it usually totals around $74.24. This provides us with enough coffee to last about three months, since we don't drink more than three to four coffees a day between my husband and me. For heavier coffee drinkers, this can get to be quite expensive.
Durability
We have had our durable Senseo coffee maker for well over two years now, and it has never given us one problem. It has efficiently made our delicious coffee without incident every day since we have gotten it.
Ease of Cleaning
This coffee maker is a breeze to clean. All of the parts pop right out, enabling everything to be washed in the sink. The water reservoir, the cup tray, and the pod holders are all removable for cleaning. . Obviously, the actual machine cannot be immersed in water. I take extra care when cleaning the parts after making cappuccino, since there are traces of milk in the pods that I am afraid would spoil if left in the drain tray or pod holders.
Price
This coffeemaker sells at various on-line sites for approximately $65.00. It is difficult to find in many retail stores.
I love my Senseo Philips HD7810 Coffee Maker. In fact, I am going to brew a fresh cup right now!
