The Ultimate Remote
Date of Review: Nov 26, 1999
Ok, it's not cheap, but it is awesome. I have had this remote for less than a week, and it has already become an essential part of my system. It is easy to use, simple to program and covers EVERY device (that uses a standard infrared remote control) in my audio/video setup. It uses AA batteries, or rechargeable batteries with an available charger stand and let's you setup 1-touch macros, like "Watch VCR" "Play DVD" or even "shut everything off." There are three distinct advantages of this remote:
1. The user interface, an intuitive touchscreen with multiple "back" screens with all the buttons for each device you own, no matter how old or how obscure.
2. The amazing support of robust online communities of users, at http://www.remotecentral.com and http://www.prontoedit.com where you can download the remote codes for your system components easily over the web. You can also get fully configured model setups to customize to your heart's content.
3. ProntoEdit, PC software that let's you program the remote graphically on your PC, with a built-in emulator to test your macros and codes, using codes you enter from your old remotes or codes you download from the web.
This gets my highest recommendation--if you have more than three remotes, you can't do without it. I found it on the web for $289, so don't be scared by the high list price of $399.
