Expensive, More PVR than DVDR, but functions well

Date of Review:  Aug 27, 2004
The Bottom Line: Good if you want PVR functionality from your cable or sat box without paying monthly fees
Review: The first DVD+R/HDD combo on the market, this is pretty much what Philips promised. Fast, flexible, pretty easy to use. Great compression gives up to 8 hours on a DVD+R/+RW with no noticeable loss of quality. It's more personal video recorder than...

POWERFUL PRODUCT FOR ANYONE WILLING TO LEARN TO OPERATE IT

Date of Review:  Jan 30, 2005
The Bottom Line: This product offers plenty of features for the money and without subscription fees for the TV guide. Take time to learn to use the HDRW-720/17 for the rewards are great.
Review: I have had the Philips HDRW 720/17 for a couple of weeks under heavy use. It is a good item with great value and a few short comings. So I highly recommend you to fully understand the advantages and disadvantages before you purchase the Philips HDRW...

Great alternative to Sky in UK with extra features

Date of Review:  Aug 31, 2004
The Bottom Line: It's not plug and play, but a good unit with some excellent features
Review: I can't speak for US users, but for the UK market this is a great alternative to the Sky PVR, which since Tivo withdrew from the market has practically cornered the PVR market. Not great for those of us who have digital cable as opposed to...

Easy set-up, very powerful, but not Tivo

Date of Review:  Feb 7, 2005
The Bottom Line: Not as good as a Tivo for hard-drive recording, but has well-integrated DVD recorder, onscreen TV Guide, and reasonably powerful editing features.
Review: This was my first DVD recorder. I decided to buy a DVD/HDD (hard disc drive) recorder, because it got to the point that I could no longer find S-VHS tapes for my VCR. Seeing the writing on the wall, I bit the bullet and changed media altogether...

I liked it at first, but overall a bad product

Date of Review:  Aug 25, 2004
The Bottom Line: Do not buy this machine, wait for Philips or others to improve upon technology.
Review: This recorder was the only one that had all the features I wanted: Hard Drive, IEEE plug for video camera, on-screen TV guide. However, this is clearly the prototype and many fixes are needed. The manual is abysmal, both confusing and full of...

Philips HDRW 720 DVD Recorder

Date of Review:  Nov 5, 2006
Review: Great product as long as it works. I had it about four weeks (purchased used), and all was well - then laser unit on DVD recorder failed. Philips won't service, and private repair more than price of unit. True, I bought it used, but it worked fine...

This Philips DVD recorder falls short

Date of Review:  Nov 23, 2004
The Bottom Line: I wouldn't recommend this machine. Too difficult to operate, terrible remote. EPG not compatible with most satellite and cable boxes. Philips should be able to do better.
Review: I was very excited about the HDRW-720 when it first came out. As soon as it was available at a reputable e-store, I bought it, especially after hearing a lot of good buzz coming from Europe where it had been released earlier this year (Euro and US...

A lemon

Date of Review:  Mar 1, 2007
Review: Never could get it properly to work - just too complicated, especially using a cable box. Then after minimal use, it broke - the disk drawer will not open. Philips says it's gone, adn not worth repairing - offered a new DVD with no features at...

RECORDS DV FROM FIREWIRE CONTROLLER

Date of Review:  Apr 24, 2008
The Bottom Line: Recommended for pro users
Review: The Philips HDRW720 (model "HDRW720/17", 120GB) is the first DVD recorder I've found (and I've tried many) that will record DV video from a computer's FireWire controller.

"DV IN" jacks on most recorders have built-in copy protection -...

Say Good-bye to Tivo 'cause this DVD Recorder Rocks!

Date of Review:  Jan 22, 2005
The Bottom Line: Great Value for the money! More DVR than DVD Recorder. Very easy to setup and use. Guaranteed to change the way you watch TV. Performs like Tivo only it's free!
Review: My review will try to capture as much useful information as I can to help anyone who is either considering buying this recorder, or already owns one, and may be having some trouble. There are 2 sections to my review: "The Bottom-Line" and the...
