Philips DVP5960 DVD Player with HDMI, Upconversion, DivX and USB

Date of Review:  Dec 26, 2006
The Bottom Line: If you need to play PAL discs on an NTSC TV, play computer files (including MP3, WMA, MPEG and AVI) and DivX, or play media files from a USB...
Review: I have been using the Philips DVP642 DVD player and it excelled at playing DivX, PAL, AVI and MPEG. But the remote control was horrible and the picture quality while playing store-bought DVDs was not the best. So I got the new and improved version -...

Great HDTV picture

Date of Review:  Jun 13, 2006
The Bottom Line: Great HDTV picture. Plays it all, even damaged discs.
Review: The rumor that the new Philips DVP5960 has corrected the bugs that plagued the Philips DVP5900 upscaling DVD player appears to be true! Also, the DVP5960 produces a much better picture than the DVP5900. The DVP5960 is "DivX Ultra" certified. I've...

This is a keeper

Date of Review:  Sep 13, 2006
The Bottom Line: The price/feature relationship cannot be beaten with unit
Review: Philips started being part of the HDMI DVD market in 2005 with the introduction of the DVP5900 player which was a failure in all. For 2006, Philips replaced it with a newer model, the DVP5960, and what a difference. I am very happy to say that they...

Where is the Quality !

Date of Review:  Mar 21, 2006
The Bottom Line: Gotta skip that one ... way to many problems with the unit.
Review: I must say that in the past I have been using a lot of Philips products from Electronics to Sonicare to most of my Kitchen Small Appliances and have been very happy with them ... until the past few years. The latest unit I have purchased is the...

A tradeoff between format compatibility and function

Date of Review:  Feb 16, 2007
The Bottom Line: Weigh the rich features carefully over the inconvenience of operating this unit.
Review: I wholeheartedly agree with all the reviewers who prasied this player for multi-format playback, USB port, HDMI output and all of it for around $ 70. Impressive. On top of that, this unit has PAL to NTSC converter, and it is very easy to change...

The Good and the Bad: Fair Warning

Date of Review:  Jan 2, 2006
The Bottom Line: If you want HDMI and video upscaling, and don't care about sending digital audio to an A/V receiver, and want to play DivX AVIs, it's a good player.
Review: The DVP 5900 is definitely an upgrade to the older DVP 642, by virtue of the HDMI interface and through it the ability to upscale DVDs to 720p and 1080i. But as HDMI and upscaling is this model's big selling point, it is also its biggest stumbling...

Great Quality, Easy to Use

Date of Review:  Nov 7, 2006
Review: I purchased this product to enhance viewing DVDs on my new LCD HiDef television. At first I didn't understand that I wouldn't get a high-definition experience with the player and its included cables. I was disappointed that the picture displayed...

Philips has no parts available to the public

Date of Review:  Apr 16, 2008
The Bottom Line: Thought this was a great unit until the belt broke.
Review: I purchased this unit to replace a Sony unit. I also purchased the Philips 19" LCD HDTV with HDMI. I set up the TV and DVP and what a great picture. I went to open the tray and nothing would happen. I could hear the motor running but nothing would...

Decent overall, terrible Xvid and MP3 support

Date of Review:  Apr 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: Fine for basic DVD watching on my analog TV. Quirky and poorly implemented extra features.
Review: I needed a basic replacement for my Panasonic DVD player which developed a bad spindle motor. I have a plain old analog TV, so I care naught for HDTV, HDMI, upconversion. My primary requirement was for good handling of scratched discs (I visit the...

The USB feature makes it all worthwhile

Date of Review:  May 29, 2007
The Bottom Line: If you have a XVID video library and want to hook it to your TV, this does the job and plays DVDs OK as well.
Review: As a DVD player, this unit doesn't excel. It has a small and finicky remote, slow navigation and loading, is intolerant of scratches and a terrible remote. I mention the remote twice because it really is bad. There's only a small window in which it...
