Pros:
Reasonably priced. Works as described. Good manual.
Cons:
Tiny button remote. Recorded title names don't include day-of-week.
The Bottom Line:
Excellent product *if* you've defined your needs accurately. I'd buy a 2nd one. Good stuff.

Bought mine directly from Philips in Oct 2007 (after being unable to find anyone else actually having it in stock) and have been very pleased with it. No real problems thus far. I was looking to get a DVR without the programming guide and required monthly subscription costs associated with products like TIVO. Just wanted an "HDD VCR" - nothing more - for time-shifted recording where I didn't have to worry about running out of media and still get great video quality. This unit does that. No, it does not do HD recording but then it never claimed to. My MX-500 universal remote "learned" all the codes from the DVR remote so I was able to avoid the tiny button problem on the remote. I wish the names for the recorded titles included the day of the week in addition to the date and time. Even better would be to permit me to set up a brief name for the event when I'm programming the timer. Having it include a DVD is gravy and is real handy when I want to "offload" the titles onto rewritable media in order to watch them in a different location. The menu system , including the timer, is fairly simple to operate. This model records only 1 event at a time. I'd pay extra $ for be able to record 2 events at a time. Thinking about getting a 2nd one for a 2nd home. Good stuff!
