Great TV for the price!
Date of Review: Mar 8, 2005
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this item to others as an alternative to similar TVs with the same amount of features that have higher prices.
After looking in the Sunday ads and online I actually stepped up to a flat screen 20" and found this. The features looked nice, but what stood out was the fact that it had 6 watts per channel for audio, and the ones I looked at in the same price range were 1 or 3 watts. When I saw it in the store the picture looked smooshed a bit, like it was a widescreen picture trying to fit in a smaller screen. I asked the rep at Best Buy about it and he said he couldn't change it. But noticing that the pic on other TVs were widescreen I threw caution to the wind.
When I got home the first thing I did was hook up the DVD inputs, the composite video inputs (best quality), and my eyes were in for a treat. Of course I had been using a 13" smaller TV for over 10 years that only had RCA inputs and one speaker. Nonetheless the picture was very crisp and clear and the sound was great. Also, the remote control is extremely simple to operate, and those who catch on to technical things quickly should be able to navigate using the remote without having to reference the manual, which is also easy to read and quite concise.
I also appreciate the fact that it has video and audio outputs, which are great if you want to dub a recording to a VCR (I believe). It's got an S-video input, which is a notch below composite video input, but my computer video card has an S-Video output, so now i have a backup monitor. It won't be as crisp as a computer monitor but it will get the job done.
I have had this for less than 12 hours and I love everything about it. The menus are very easy to navigate around, and it's got a great picture and sound. The only bad thing is that it doesn't do my taxes or do dishes, but I hear the fine folks at Philips are working on that. If you're looking for an inexpensive 20" flat screen TV, don't pass up this versatile model!
