Greatest Velvets' Hits?

by   lansky2000 ,  Aug 15, 2000
Pros: Greatest VU compilation on the market...
Cons: Also the most exhaustive...
Review: This is the definitive Velvets collection that hardcore VU fans can't afford to be without. Reason being that every damn thing they've put on tape worth having is right in this box. There's five CD's that trace the Velvets' star-crossed career from...

The Complete VU

by   pugslyaddams ,  Feb 22, 2002
Pros: Lou Reed's lyrics, John Cale's viola, sound experimentation, the contents of the book, the extras
Cons: the construction of the book
The Bottom Line: Lou Reed is an under appreciated genius. This is a longer review if you're not interested don't read it
Review: I'm not sure why I bought this box set. It was really something of an impulse buy. I'd enjoyed the Velvet Underground greatest hits CD Words and Music of Lou Reed. My friend had it and I'd already been a minor fan of his solo work but once I heard VU I...

Rock's Most unheralded Influential Band

by   fuche_bu ,  May 29, 2001
Pros: A complete overview of one of rock's most influential bands
Cons: none come to mind
The Bottom Line: Thorough documentation of an extraordinary, influential band.
Review: There is an old adage in rock-n-roll that the Velvet Underground only had about 200 fans but everyone of them started their own band. VU didn't sell very many in their heyday but they altered the course of rock-n-roll with their unique blend of rock...

Everything's Gonna Be Alright

by   deliciae ,  Aug 9, 2000
Pros: Comprehensive overview of band's career
Cons: Expensive
Review: Peel Slowly And See is the one object I would definitely grab if my apartment caught fire.

Long Island, NY in the summer: All the golden children go to the Hamptons and all the rest stay home, except the ones who escape into the...

The Alpha and Omega of V.U. Sets

by   hsauertieg ,  May 3, 2000
Pros: Comprehensive set, great music, surprising alternate versions of V.U. standards
Cons: Expensive
Review: This set contains 5 CD's, each exceeding 70 minutes in length. Every Velvet Underground album released during their active partnership is here in its entirety, sandwiched on disc between first-issue tracks -- demos, "alternate" cuts and live...

Peel Quickly and Listen

by   hubbjm ,  Aug 26, 2000
Pros: Design, inclusiveness, great bonus tracks
Cons: A couple of tracks are not perfect
Review: 'Peel Slowly And See' is the best box set I have listened to in both design and content. The box contains five discs. The first represents the bands work in 1965 before any album had fully developed. The second contains 'The Velvet Underground and...

A spectacular boxed set

by   jordan_tar , top reviewer in Music at Epinions.com ,  Dec 30, 2000
Pros: Great selections, the closet mix, generally essential
Cons: Costly, no "Ostrich" or "Cycle Annie"
Review: "Peel Slowly and See" is an amazing box set, one that no fan of great music should be without.

It's a boxed set of five disks. The disks contain the complete Velvet Underground albums "The VU and Nico", "White...

The only boxed set I own

by   chessiecat ,  May 15, 2001
Pros: Comprehensive, Packaging, booklet
Cons: Some of the material should have stayed in the can
The Bottom Line: With this set and "Loaded (Fully Loaded)" it is all one needs from this group
Review: With the death a few years ago of Sterling Morrison, I assume that it is safe to say that there will never be another Velvet Underground reunion. How sad to see him go.

I bought this box set right when it was released and immediately sat down...
