Pearl Harbor...love and war story

My husband and I went to see this last evening. I had heard it was going to be good. But I also heard one review that it was "disturbing". I can't stand to watch movies that are "disturbing". I think about them for days and feel so bad for the people who lived through it (and those who did not). I thought of PRIVATE RYAN. It was a good movie but I would never watch it again because it was so "disturbing". Anyway, because my husband is such a war and history buff, we went to see it.

The movie is three hours long. The first hour of the movie is more touching and is more of the "love story" part. There are several parts in the first hour that are very amusing. But the last two hours are nothing at all that you would laugh about. Maybe a smile or two at touching parts, but mostly parts where you would cry if you are at all sensitive. The second hour is mostly intense fighting. A lot of blood death and dying.

I'm not going to go into detail about the movie much. It would take too long and would ruin it for you also. There are parts where you will be able to predict what will happen with the couples. Not really any shocking surprises. I learned a good bit about what happened in Pearl Harbor on December 7 and the days and weeks to follow. I studied bits of it in history in college, but until last evening, didn't really know what it was all about.

The music was great. I'm already looking forward to the soundtrack. The effects were very realistic. The actors and actresses were excellent. Ben Affleck played the part well, as did the others.

On a personal note, my grandfather was killed in WW II. My father was only 2 years old. We have many pictures of him in and out of uniform. Ben Affleck showed a great resemblance to my grandfather. My grandfather had the long, high cheek boned face and other physical features as Ben in the movie. It made me think a lot about how my grandfather must have felt being in Europe at that time. My grandmother has letters that he sent to her while in the war. Some of same things that Rafe said to Evelyn in the movie were things that my grandfather had written...like how thinking about coming home to his family is what kept him alive. That was very touching to me.
