Payday: What a Great Game to Play!
Date of Review: Jan 4, 2009
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend this game for anyone who enjoys a fun time and it can be just about how ever long you want it to last!
Everyone looks forward to Paydays when you can finally collect your cash! Everyone also looks forward to play the game, Payday!
-The Basics-
Payday is a game about, well, Paydays! You roll the dice and move your piece along through each month until you reach the Payday space! You can collect Mail which could be just an advertisement or postcard, or something like a money-gram or a bill! You can also make Deals by purchasing a card and selling it for a higher price later in the game! You collect $3,500 every Payday and to start the game. You can also take out as many loans as you want. Although, as you know with loans, you can end up paying interest!
-How to Play-
You can play this game with 2-4 players and the person who has the closest upcoming birthday will go first. When it is your turn, you roll the die and move that number of spaces. If you roll a 6, you win the Jackpot money which is put on the Jackpot spot for various reasons. Sometimes you will not win any money because there is no money on the spot. Each month has 31 days and there are 14 different spaces. When you land a space you read the instructions and do what it tells you to. It depends how long you want to play and how many people you have to decide how many months you wish to play. Once everyone has completed the last month, the game ends and the player with the most money wins!
-The Spaces-
The 14 different spaces are Mail, Deal, Sweepstakes, Lottery, Radio Contest, Found a Buyer, Happy Birthday, Fun Day, Buy Groceries, Yard Sale, Family Casino Night, Charity Walk, Jackpot, and of course, Payday! When you land on a Mail space you draw a certain number of Mail cards. Once you land on Payday you get rid of your Mail cards and pay and bills. There are 4 types of Mail Cards: Ads, Postcards, Bills, and Moneygrams. Ads are just like junk mail, and Postcards are just like a little letter you would receive in the mail. Bills are paid at Payday and you put the money from a Moneygram on the Jackpot space. The deal space allows you to pick up a Deal card and buy it if you want. You can make money if you land on a spot later in the game. If you can't sell it by the end of the game, it was a waste of your money. You can only sell a Deal at a time. The Sweepstakes spot is a nice way to start of the game or month since it is located at the beginning of the month! You will win $1,000 times the amount you roll on the die! The Lottery space is one of my favorites because it is a lot of fun. The bank puts in $1,000 and each player adds $100 if they want in. You choose which number you think will be rolled and if you guess right, you win all the money! This is optional and you keep rolling untill someone wins. Radio Contest is where the player who rolls the highest number on the die wins $1,000 from the bank! The Found a Buyer space is where you are able to sell any Deals you have bought so far in the game for an increased price, although you can only sell one at a time. Happy Birthday space gives you $100 from each player for your wonderful birthday! Fun Day might not be so fun after all, since you now owe $200 to the Jackpot space. Buy Groceries will also make you pay $200 to the Jackpot. Yard Sale is really and awesome space on the board! You roll the die and whatever you roll multiplied by $100 is what you pay for one Deal! Even if you roll a 6 you will make tons of money! Family Casino Night is a space where the player who landed there rolls the die again and if it is an odd number they collect $500 from the bank. But, if it is even, they must put $500 into the Jackpot! Charity Walk space forces the other players to donate $100 times the roll of the die into the Jackpot space. You don't have to pay. The Jackpot space you may be wondering about by now. All of that money goes in, but does any come out? Yes it does! You can't actually land on the Jackpot Space, but if you roll a 6 you collect all the money on it. The Payday space is the last spot on the board. If you rolled a number that would make you go farther, you still stop on Payday. First, the player collects the $3,500 salary. You owe 10% interest to the bank on any loans. Pay any of the bills you have collected and move your piece back to Start if you are going to continue another month.
-Overall Recommendation-
This game is great because it is quick and easy. You can play a very short game if you do not have a lot of time, or you can play a lengthy one. The setup is very easy and this game does not get old. You are guaranteed a fun time each time you pull this box of the shelf!
