Good phone. Be sure to read the manual!

I bought the Panasonic KX-TG1033S DECT 6.0 cordless phone set recently and I'm happy with it. The sound is very clear as long as you are within range. Within my home the sound is excellent. There's no static or interference. As a test, I walked out of my condo, a six unit townhouse, and was able to easily carry on a conversation within about 100 yards of the base station with no obstructions except the exterior wall. The acid test was to walk to the parking lot, and try to make a call with about 120 feet and six concrete block walls between the handset and the base station. It didn't work, but to be fair, no cordless phone I've tried has worked better than poorly in that situation.

I like the design of the handset. It's a comfortable handful and feels very sturdy. It's long enough that it extends from your ear almost to your mouth like a traditional handset, and the number buttons are fairly large. There's no hint of an antenna; no stub, nothing, so the handset looks sleek. The speakerphone in each handset works well. Each handset can have a different ring tone. There are five phone-like chirps and chimes and ten polyphonic tunes to choose from. I'm not crazy about overly long ring tones, but the Panasonic has seven longer tunes, and three short musical riffs that are that are pretty decent. I think that most people will be able to find a ring tone that isn't too annoying.

I've used the built-in speakerphone twice for extended conversations and asked how the speakerphone sounded. In both cases the parties responded that they weren't aware I had them on a speakerphone. That's unusual, and speaks highly for the feature. My sister, who wears hearing aids, actually preferred the sound when on the speaker phone.

One MAJOR plus for the handsets is that they use two plain AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries! There's no need to track down some oddball battery pack when the batteries finally die. Stock AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries are available almost anywhere for a couple of dollars each.

As noted by other reviewers, there's no numeric display on the base station answering machine to tell how many calls you have waiting for you, and the only indication on the handset is a "New Message" message on the handset's LCD display. Each handset has a yellow LED on it used to indicate that the handset is charging. It would have been nice if the designers had chosen to cause that LED to flash when you have a message waiting so you could tell with just a glance whether you have a message waiting or not. I have the base station mounted in on a wall mount phone jack so the flashing LED is difficult to see. I'm thinking of moving the base station so that the LED indicator is more easy to see.

I looked at the manual and buried in there is the way to make the LED flash when you have a message waiting. It's easy, but buried deep in the handset menu. My rating jumped from three stars to four!

The answering machine is pretty basic, but it sounds good and is easily controlled from each handset. The answering machine can be operated remotely from another touchtone phone.

One neat feature of the Panasonic KX-TG1033S is that each phone can be set to ring an alarm at at a specific time and even date! The alarm isn't difficult to set and can be set to ring once, or daily.
