I am ashamed to admit it, but my family would fall to pieces on any roadtrip without a dvd player! We have traveled to Pennsylvania and Maryland without one, and we vowed, never again!! I have two boys, one who is on the autism spectrum, who is addicted to dvds as it is. Trying to coop either one of them up in a car without something to watch and pass the time. We make annual trips upstate and out of state, and it is a relief to everyone for Disney or Batman to keep them occupied!!
We have a few portable dvds (it does not work to have just one when two boys are fighting over it), and this was our first model. It is a bit different than the average model, as the screen lifts up and swivels, unlike the clam-shell versions that are more popular today. It is a 9 inch LED widescreen, and even with the resolutions of 480i and 576i, it is still hard to see from far away. The laptop like flat bottom helps whomever is watching it, hold it comfortably on their lap. It is fast to start up, quiet, and is easy to open and close. The buttons are fool proof, and everything is simple and easy to learn. It has surround sound that gives you the movie theater quality with it's built in Dolby Digital speakers. It does come with headphone jacks so that your child is the only person listening to it if you do not want to listen to what they are. It also has a DVD RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD AUDIO, CD-R, CD-RW and Highmat picture cd! It allows you to listen to cds instead if you want, and has other file formats, JPEG, and MP3 for downloads. It has an image aspect ratio of 16:9 It has electronic skip protection for those bumps in the road and sudden stops that you may have. The colors are very sharp and bright.
The battery lasts for about 3 hours before you have to recharge it. On long trips, we usually do this at rest stops. The dvd player itself weighs about 3 pounds, so kids can tote it around like a handheld without it being a burden. Before the portable dvds, we used our laptop computer which is big and bulky in comparison, and with the battery life in the car being about 60-75 minutes, there is notenough time to get through an entire movie. Not withstanding that, the idea of giving my child a $1,500.00laptop to play with doesn't set well with me! The only thing that I did not like was the screen being vulnerable to being bent or broken, as it is much more fragile that the clamshell models. We only have one of these for that reason, and in addition to be able to tell the dvd player apart, so the kids do not fight over whose is whose! These are great also for camping, I found. When you are in the great outdoors, it is nice. My kids like to sit around the fire watching their favorite show or listening to their favorite songs. Nice for baseball games, going to a relatives house over the holidays or going to sleep. It brings peace and sanity for us!!
