A Decent Shaver At Last!
Date of Review: May 31, 2008
The Bottom Line: High price, but for a top end shaver that exceeds expectations. Great for tough beards.
I am one of those people with a tough beard who have never had much success with electric Shavers. I discovered the Panasonic linear motor a few years ago and it was okay for me - not the perfect shave, but a time-saver that coped with my beard because the motor never slowed down. In the end I gave it to my dad and stuck with a blade.
Recently I had the urge to save time again and bought a high-end Philips. I returned it because it pulled at my hair, took forever and still left a patchy shave. I decided to take the risk with ES8228s despite the high cost in Canada and no return policy. It turned out to be a great choice.
I have only used this shaver wet so far, which was a surprise as my last Panasonic didn't work well for me that way. The 8228 is easy to use, follows my face, cuts through tough beard without pulling and doesn't require too many passes. The most surprising thing was an even finish that is very similar to using a Fusion, yet with less irritation. Being able to run the head under cold water also means a cool foil, which I am sure plays a big part in reducing face burn. The only struggle this razor has for me is achieving a tidy side-burn line, but that's an easy fix with a blade.
I haven't used the cleaning system because soap and water leaves this razor clean and fresh after just a few seconds. This shaver has exceeded the high expectations that I had, and I have no complaints other than the price in Canada.
