Spectacular Movie

Date of Review:  Jan 21, 2008
The Bottom Line: Beautiful and haunting. Well worth the watch.
Review: I had sky high expectations for this movie, but I wasn't worried because Guillermo del Toro has never let me down with a film, and this one is no exception. What an engaging fantasy! The cruelty of the real world in which this little girl finds...

Concurrent Fantasy and Reality: A Masterpiece

Date of Review:  Jan 22, 2007
The Bottom Line: A wonderful and unique blending of parallel stories - one taking place in the world we share, and the other in the mind of the lead character.
Review: After not having been to the theatre for the few weeks immediately preceding this year's Golden Globe telecast made choosing the film to go see this past weekend particularly challenging. So many good (and interesting sounding) films out there – and...

A masterpiece

Date of Review:  Aug 10, 2008
The Bottom Line: Amazing. I'd recommend it to all teenagers and adults.
Review: Pan's Labyrinth is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. The only other work by Guillermo del Toro that I had seen was Hellboy, so my expectations weren't too high for this movie. I went into the theater expecting a weird fantasy flick,...

Pan's Labyrinth......An Unexpected, but Wonderful Journey

Date of Review:  Apr 5, 2007
The Bottom Line: A must see! Don't let the subtitles deceive you, it's beautifully done movie! Still....be aware of the gore that goes along with the beauty.
Review: Pan's Labyrinth is a beautifully dark fairy tale circulating around a little girl's even darker reality. The story begins in 1940's Spain. The little girl, Ofelia, and her pregnant mother journey into the woods to meet her mother's new husband at a...

"Betrayal & Consequence"

Date of Review:  Apr 29, 2007
The Bottom Line: It's nicely done and raises a lot of questions about every single character
Review: Readers of any early twentieth century Latin American novel will know the term 'magical realism'. Its main exponents include Marquez and Llorca and it blurs the gap between reality and make believe. The many trailers for 'Pan's Labyrinth' highlight...

You will be completely lost in the Labyrinth-Don't Be Fooled

Date of Review:  Jun 30, 2007
The Bottom Line: An extremely dark movie. It is depressing and oppressive, the imagery. Even though it won 3 Oscars for makeup, art direction and cinematography, it is much adeu about nothing.
Review: This is not a movie for most Americans, that's not a slam against anyone else. It's sort of like when people are telling you how great Cirque Du Soleil is, and you see people doing back bends, and contorting themselves and think, that's it? Sure...

A marvelous film

Date of Review:  Jul 3, 2007
The Bottom Line: Though only in Spanish, this film is very artistic and well composed. Highly Recommended
Review: In the 1940's, we were at war with Germany and the Nazi regime. A less important note is that Hitler funded the Franco forces in Spain. El Laberinto del fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) takes place during this time in a rural town in Spain.

On the...

Pan's Labyrinth

Date of Review:  Jul 8, 2007
The Bottom Line: One of the best films of 2006.
Review: "In a dark time...when hope was bleak...there lived a young girl...who's only escape was in a legend that wanted her back".

This dark and haunting tale, flawlessly atmospheric and Gothic, illuminated by the genius of director Guillermo del...

"Pan's Labyrinth:" Another Good Movie, Not As Great As I'd Hoped

Date of Review:  Sep 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: In a visually stunning film, a girl escapes from the horrors of a repressive political regime through her imaginary muse who she hopes can save her.
Review: Given my general disappointment in last year's Academy Awards, I was looking forward to watching "Pan's Labyrinth." Based on everything I had read or heard about it, I was prepared to say that it had been robbed for Best Picture and I was ready to...

Once upon a time in dark and forbidding dream...

Date of Review:  Dec 14, 2007
The Bottom Line: A fairy tale in the truest sense... lovely, powerful, terrible and instructive. A truly unique piece of fantasy.
Review: Dark and brilliant, like a black diamond, Pan's Labrynth ( or El Laberinto del fauno) is a foreign film treasure worth digging for! Here we see two stories entwined. Somewhere in Spain around the year 1944, fascist soldiers are hunting down rebels...
