Author's Review

A personal assistant that doesn't ask for a raise and more time off at the same time? NO WAY!!!!
I had never even considered a pda, much less thought I'd rely on one on a daily basis, but I received a palm V and the corresponding modem and GoType Pro® keyboard as a combination birthday/Christmas present (yes I AM a lucky man).
I had always thought of them as strictly a forum for hand held gaming ala gameboy. I could not have been more wrong. Okay, okay, I do play games on it, but I find myself using it for a lot more things than games. In fact, my favorite game is discovering more and more things I can do with it.
In the past , my personal assistants have ranged from a Franklin® planner (the paper version) to the bi-polar secretary who had to quit because her son had caused a bomb scare (honest). Up until now I actually missed that Franklin® planner.
Now I am the proud USER of a piece of valuable equipment smaller than a pack of cigarettes and costing less than what a four-pack/week smoker spends in a year (including all the accessories).
On the down side, I had to get used to using the stylus and the graffiti® style of writing. The addition of the GoType® keyboard makes most entries much easier, though the size of the keyboard is more suited to the Christopher Columbus typing method (land first, then discover what you've landed on) than the touch type method (but then I have to look at the keyboard anyway to make sure those pesky keys don't move!). I also have had to reload all of my information once, but I was prepared for this and had backed up all my info on my pc using the handy cradle interface that came with it.
On the plus side, I am able to carry it around in any pocket without even realizing it's there. The back light is very useful when playing games late at night , whereas the pc sends enough light out in the bedroom to illuminate a small runway. The free and shareware is extensive and availability of things like hand mail, modems , keyboards just add to the versatility of an already invaluable tool. And so far, it isn't prone to fits of uncontrolled crying.
As a salesman, I use it to remind me of appointments, keep a list of current and prospective customers and can't wait to try out the ICQ program for pda's I just loaded...WOOHOO!
Now if I could just discover where that secretary left my rolodex.
