Product Review

T3 or T2

by   sinterklaas ,   Dec 16, 2003

Pros:  Cheaper than the T3

Cons:  No Graffiti-area

The Bottom Line:  If you want a Palm you can get one, they have a very wide range and I think everybody can find one that fits like a glove.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

No, I'm not talking about the Terminator movie, but about the Palm Tungsten T2 and T3.

I assume you read some reviews of the T2, this review is just to help you pick a T2 of T3. Or if you just bought a T2, you can read this and be happy you didn't return it to your store.

I recently bought a T2, it was just released and I already knew the T3 was coming. But the specifications of the T3 indicated that it wasn't going to be a cheap Palm. The T2 was already a bit above my budget, but I really like the sliding thing at the bottom and the Bluetooth.

The T2 is a reasonably priced Palm. You get a very complete box filled with a lot of nice stuff (PDF reader, MS Office document reader, Realplayer and a lot more).
I recommend that you buy the Palm Tungsten Essential kit, you'll get 6 protective screens, a wiping cloth, a cover to protect your Palm and some spare pens.

The only major differences between the T2 and the T3 are the larger screen and faster cpu of the T3.
The larger screen is an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that you have a larger screen and the screen can be used in portrait mode. The disadvantage is that you don't have a Graffiti-area anymore. I really use that area a lot, the on-screen Graffiti just doesn't work like I want it to. And the home button isn't available too and that button gets touched a lot (you can also hold the middle of your navigation button for a few second, but touching the home button is just so much quicker).
I can't really comment on the speed of the cpu of the T3, the T2 is just fast enough for me. If a want a fast cpu I'll buy a laptop.
I was told the quality of the screen is exactly the same on both Palm's. There was a small difference between the T1 and T2, but the T3 is just as good a the T2 (and I really like that screen, I checked out some PPC's and they just weren't as good as my T2)
So the only point for me is the large screen. I personally appreciate the graffiti area. If you're not used to Graffiti I recommend the T3 and otherwise you have to decide for yourself. I think experienced Palm users can't do without it.
The T3 is also more expensive and I think the prices of the T2 will drop. So if you don't need a large screen the T2 might just as well be the right choice. The T3 and T2 are both some nice machines and you won't regret you bought one.
