Author's Review
Last night my husband and I sat down to watch "P.S. I love You" on dvd. I knew what to expect somewhat from the previews and reading through a few other reviews. But wow. This movie was great, yet horrible at the same time. I loved it but I wanted to turn it off all in the same moments. I do recommend this movie and if you finish reading through this review you will see why.
P.S. I Love You
Is rated PG 13, and runs for 127 minutes. It offers both widescreen and full-screen versions on the one disc. There are extras included on the dvd including additional scenes, a James Blunt music video and more.
The movie
The movie begins with 2 married people walking down the street. The woman is mad, and you can tell. Her husband behind her trying to make up with her even though he doesn't know what he has done wrong. They enter their apartment where their fight becomes a full on brawl. We find out that Jerry (Gerard Butler) has said the "wrong" thing to Holly's mother. Holly (Hilary Swank) blows it out of proportion.
This is the type of fight my husband and I have had a million times. It's really over nothing, but you just can't let the other person be right.
They make up pasionately and then Jerry does a really cute strip tease dance (great scene, that had both my husband and I cracking up). They fall asleep in each others arms.
In the next scene, we are at Jerry's funeral in Patricia's; Holly mother's (Kathy Bates) pub. Its an irish funeral. Everyone is meant to have a good time and have a shot of whiskey for Jerry. Holly is struggling to keep it together but is surrounded by her closest friends and family.
My biggest gripe at this point is that we have no idea what happened to Jerry or when it happened.
They continue the party with everyone getting drunk. Holly meets Daniel (Harry Conick Jr.), a bar hand at the pub who says all the wrong things at the wrong time in the wrong way. He is strange.
After speaking with her mother Holly goes home to her apartment by herself. She clears a space for Jerry's urn lays in bed and calls Jerry's answering service to listen to his voice over and over. She locks herself in for weeks. Friends are calling and she won't answer. Her mother is calling and she won't answer. She replays their fight over and over in her mind and starts watching sappy old sad movies while she walks around in Jerry's clothes. I think she becomes a bit delusional. She is singing in a hairbrush wearing Jerry's clothes when finally her mother and friends come breaking into her apartment which looks like it should be condemned. It's Holly's 30th birthday. They are there with balloons and signs.
They get her house in a manageable order and get Holly dressed and looking decent. They are all sitting around in the living room when one of Jerry's friends brings in a box that he said was delivered. They open the box and its a birthday cake. The message on the cake reads....
"Happy Birthday my love"
"love, Jerry"
And taped on the inside of the top of the box is a tape recorder. It's Jerry with a message for Holly......

This movie was beautiful and moving while at the same time sad and depressing. Lets just say that there were a few tissues used by me and my husband (He would kill me if he knew I put this!!!) while watching this movie. This movie has parts that are so REAL, and it makes you think....
What would I do if something happened to my husband???
P.S. I Love You takes you back through Holly and Jerry's life and parts make your heart melt. Jerry leaves Holly instructions for what to do with her life and it shows how well he knew his wife....and how much he loved her. Its hard at parts to watch Holly wait for these letters and then see her remenese. You really become invested in these characters, well at least we did. It really made us think.
There are some really funny scene's with Lisa Kudrow who plays one of Holly's two best friends. She is a man eater, or at least she tries to be, and she plays it well. Its almost reminiscent of Samantha from Sex and the City only rated PG-13.
Gina Gershon plays Holly's other best friend, and while she is beautiful, her role in the movie is not so big yet still good.
As for Hilary Swank's performance....fantastic as always. She really made me grieve with her. I have been a fan of her work since watching Million Dollar Baby years ago. This girl really becomes the characters she plays, and she makes you feel everything she is feeling. Its no wonder she has 2 oscars.
Gerard Butler, though he passes away in the first 15 minutes of the movie is seen in flash back throughout the entire movie. It's a nice change from "300", and wow, does he look good ladies. He also gives a great performance. The love that his character had for his wife will leave you wishing for that same love in your own life. He played this role to a tee.
Kathy Bates character was kind of mean and rude, which is like alot of the other roles she has played. My husband kept saying that he could still see her holding the axe in "Misery". I guess some roles just stick, huh?
I would definately recommend sitting down and watching this movie with the person that you love. P.S. I Love You is a chick flick, but only to a certain extent. It reminded me and my hubby that everyday is a gift, and that we should make the most of it together. Corny or not, its true. It also got us talking about some things that are important since we do have 3 young children. I just like the fact that this movie made me apprieciate my husband and my family more. No one is ever promised tomorrow, so make the best of today.
