Author's Review
My Overall Opinion of this product, I love it. Now I will break down my options of each individual aspect of the product.
Glossary:
Apps (Application software for the Smart Phone)
-Cell Phone
The cell phone portion of the camera works fine. You hit the green talk button, which brings up a phone dial pad on the PDA, you can use the buttons to dial up where you need to go. Or you can use your contact list, simply select the name of the person you wish to contact, and select the phone number you want it to dial, and it will dial the person right from your contact list. The sound quality for talking is normal for a cell phone, nothing special, but more then gets the job done.
-Blue Tooth
I have a Wireless Blue Tooth headset by Motorola. It fits on my ear ok, and it doesn't cut in and out, I'll get more into this product in another review. I have had no issues with the Audiovox blue tooth set up. It syncs easily and effectively
-PDA
Typical PDA functions, it comes with mobile Word, and Excel, which is cool, I haven't really found it to be all that necessary, but it's nice to have if I need it. It also has windows media player which I'll get more into later. And countless free and paid for software is available via the internet, which has made having my PDA a dream. I use software like Microsoft voice command, which allows me to tell my PDA what program to open, or even just say who I want to call, and it calls them, a button less environment is a must have when your driving and you don't want to actually look at the phone during that time. I also downloaded a universal remote, so when Im in bed, I can say Turn off TV, and my cell phone will turn the TV off, isn't that sweet :) I also use a program called AdvantGo, so if I don't feel like sucking up my bandwidth by logging on the internet directly with my cell phone, as I only get 50MB's of DataStream a month. So I can download news reports via AdvantGo for free and view them anytime I want, which is excellent if you just want something to read when youre on the toilet. Not to mention the other countless games or data apps you can download.
-Video Player
Using windows mobile Media player is an excellent way of watching videos. I find the easiest way to take advantage of this feature is to get a media converter software for your home computer, and convert all your videos to WMV's. The optimal stream rate is 384kbps. If you go higher the video will become choppy, as the processor can not handle it. if you go lower, there is a lot of lost quality, I generally watch cartoons as they are easier to watch on it then regular shows as they are brighter. Though regular shows can be watched on it, like myth busters, since it's not a heavy action type show, it watches beautifully on my smart phone when i'm bored at work.
-Mp3
plays Mp3's and WMA's, I can't seem to get it to cycle through WMA's it just stops after it plays one, but at least with mp3's it continues playing through all the mp3's in the folder. Perhaps I need to figure out how to make play lists in it, which may resolve the issue, I haven't gotten around to that. The sound quality isn't that great, so you don't need to bother with high bit rate sound tracks, I've used both the speaker and the headphones that it comes with. It does get the job done if you are dying for music, and it can get loud enough to play music easily audible for 5 or more meters from your location, so you can play music for you and a few friends when you are at work. I also watch music videos as described above with the video features. Again remember the music quality is not the greatest, if you like quality, stick to a mp3 player. It's also nice in the sense where you can set mp3's as your ring tone :) Just don't be like me and start dancing when someone calls you, and forget to answer the phone!
-Camera
The camera is only 0.3 Mega pixels, and quite frankly, it sucks. Comparable to other .3 MP cameras, it's good, especially with the viewing screen on this smart phone. But all in all, i don't really use it except for the odd candid shots, which don't turn out unless you have excellent lighting. Even though it does have a flash, I suppose it gets the job done though in a pinch.
Email
It uses an Outlook based E-mail program which allows me to check my ISP's E-mail, and my Gmail, any kind of pop E-mail, which allows me to answer my E-mail on the go, and since it's a smart phone, I can download and send E-mail anywhere any time. It only downloads a few hundred characters of the E-mail, and then you can mark the E-mail for download if you want the rest to help you save on memory and bandwidth.
-Calendar
I've never remembered so many appointments before; it tells you on the front screen of your cell phone what you need to do next. I use this feature for any activity I plan on doing, every morning when I wake up and pick up my phone off the charger, I can see what I'm doing for the next few days summed up on the front screen.
-Contact list
Contact list keeps a detailed description of all your contacts, such as address name phone number for home, mobile, or fax, and more.
-Task List
Keep track of all the chores you need to accomplish, great if you need to set up a shopping list, or pay parking tickets!
-General
All in all, I love having a device that does everything I need so I don't need to carry multiple devices on me; I love the purchase, and will never regret buying it.
The front screen is called the today screen. And you can see how many tasks you have, what your next activity will be on the calendar, tells you how many unread E-mail you have, and a personal info card incase you lose your phone, so when someone finds it, it tells you who the phone belongs to!
It does freeze on occasion which can be fixed by using the reset button located on the bottom of the device. And if by small chance it loses all its data, which can happen. I keep regular backups on my home computer, and on the SD memory card that I use. I have a 1 gig memory card which gets what I need done!
In order to close programs, there is no exit in them, you need to go into the system folder, then memory, and actually end the task of the program, I don't care for this, but it's not that difficult. Please feel free to add comments, and Ill expand my review if you have any questions that I did not cover!
Recommended software :
-Microsoft Voice Command
-Universal Remote TV Controller (infrared port on cell phone has limited range, but it's voice activated software so you can just place your phone near the TV, and yell at it :)
-Photo contact (see pictures of the person that calls you!)
-WINAVI for your computer to convert video's to WMV format so you can watch them on your cell phone.
