Decent office calulator with many features

I recently was given this new calculator for us at my office desk. I work as a paralegal at a large law firm. So far the calculator does its job well, however depending on what you need it for, this may be out of your league.

What do you mean "out of my league," I'm a genius!

Ah, good for you! If you are genius, a CPA, or run your own business, then you will really enjoy this calculator. However, if you are John Everyday Deskworker, this product might be a little much. For me, I would say that it has more functions than I could ever need or use. In fact, sometimes I find it difficult to perform even basic functions because there are so many options. For example, I think to subtract 10 from 20, you have to hit 20 + 10 - (In that you are saying 20 plus negative 10). A little strange...but I'm sure there is an easier way (and if you know it let me know).

How big is this thing?

Well, in my "epinion," I would say that this is miscategorized by Canon. Canon bills this model as a "Palm Printing" size, which is the smallest of the three options (there is also "Desktop Printing" and "Commercial Printing"). I think this should clearly be considered a Desktop Printing calculator. It takes up a little more space than I would prefer, but to say that you can carry this thing around easily, and call it "portable," might be a stretch. (On the box, it does say "Mini Desktop") According to my measurements, it is about 11" long (with the paper arm up) and 6" at its widest point across. It all depends what you will be using this calculator for. Since my desk has plenty of room on it, the size is fine.

How's the display look?

Thanks, great question! The display is what I like best about the calculator. It is easy to read from a reasonable distance. It is extra large considering it is 1" tall and over 4" across. That is nearly the entire width of the body of the calculator. The display also features 12 digits (unlike the common 10 digit calcs) which comes in handy when doing complex calculations with large numbers or long decimals. Put simply, if you don't intend to use this for numbers that exceed the hundreds of billions (100,000,000,000) or one ten-billionth of a fraction(0.00000000001)...well, you should be just fine with this little guy.

What about the power sources?

You have your standard AC adapter (which is what I use at my desk) included in the box, and an optional space for 4 AA batteries. If you plan to use batteries, note that there is a low-battery indicator on the display.

What are some of the functions that make this calculator stand out from others?

Oh, another good question. There are useful tax, cost-sell-margin, clock, and calendar functions. I personally have not had a need to use the tax or cost-sell-margin functions yet (and not sure if I will), however if I do I'll update this review. The clock/calendar function is very nice, because after you have done a lengthy calculation and printed it out, you can then print out the time and date that the calculation was made. I like this feature a lot because after having many little papers lying around with numbers on them, it's nice to be able to see which ones were from which days.

Speaking of printing, how's it look?

The printing is very nice on this calculator. It is in 2 colors (red and black) and very clear and crisp (probably also because it is still relatively new). The printouts are easy to read, and the paper tears easily off of the roll when you are done.

Anything else?

Basically, when it comes to options this calculator will have everything you will need. Canon seems to think that the next generation of portable printing calculators has arrived with the P23-DHV. I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but it is a very nice, and stylish looking little guy with a new silver metallic body design.
