Author's Review
Let's start with the bad news. A sling can be difficult to learn to use. I bought the instructional video and still had a tough time figuring it out. But, with practice and patience, my daughter and I are old pros at it now.
I was given 3 baby front carriers from various friends who've no longer needed them. Therefore, I felt that I could not justify spending money on a sling. But while doing research on the sling for a baby shower gift I saw the many benefits and decided to buy one for our family. I would have to say that it is the best $35 I ever spent.
We take the sling wherever we go, just in case my baby gets a little fussy and needs a little help taking a nap. It's also good to use if you need to breastfeed (discreetly) while out. I've only done that twice and once was in a Wal-Mart while standing in the long check-out line!
I also use it while at home. I don't usually cook or clean with the sling on as some of my friends do as I still find it difficult to balance and maneuver around her. But I will put her in the sling if I walk down to the mailbox or cut flowers in my backyard.
My daughter is now 5.5 months old and about 17 lbs. I have carried her in the sling for a couple hours at a time and did not have back pain. The pain was more in my feet from the weight and recently have been experiencing a sore shoulder for the same reason.
I like that I can carry her in different positions; laying down to sleep, laying down facing out, sitting up looking out, sitting up facing me, hip carry. I have not yet tried the back carry and have some reservations about doing so, but will probably try it in the future. It's also easy to switch her from position to position in just a few seconds.
Another nice feature is that it is compact. Since it is mostly fabric and a few small plastic rings, it fits nicely into our diaper bag.
The sling is also good it you have a very fussy or colicky infant. When my friend's son was going through a period of colic, the only thing that would soothe him was being walked around in the sling.
I have several friends who have slings made by different companies. But it seems to me that the OTSBH sling is the easiest to use and the most comfortable-- for mother and baby.
