A Treasure

There is good reason that this won the Best Picture Academy Award. It is a classic, sweeping tale of adventure and romance, beautifully done by masters of their craft. I just hate that there is a current attempt to capitalize on this film's ideas, "I Dreamed of Africa" - Kim Basinger is NO Meryl Streep!!

I saw this in the theater when it was a new release. There were points in the film when everyone, including the big strapping guy sitting in front of me, were audibly sobbing from being so moved and touched by the poignancy of the story. Not sucker punches, but truly moving relationships and realistic presentations of experiences. I did live in Africa as a child, and there was some familiarity of scenery and types of people that may have added to my love of this movie.

I have rented this video to share with others and still find in enthralling and beautiful. It is better viewed on the big screen, of course. It is also hard to see a a film that is about 15 years old with the same fresh eye as when it was in the theaters originally. Certainly we now have different feelings about these actors, who have matured and
done so much over these years. Robert Redford was dashing and desirable as the rogueish romantic character he portrayed (perhaps he will always look this way in my mental images), and Meryl Streep a strong and wonderful woman, vulnerable yet responsible and admirable.

I would recommend this film to anyone, and hope people see it BEFORE they go see "I Dreamed of Africa".
