Hit the Trail

I got Oregon Trail 3rd edition at a marked down price of 7.99. I loved pretending the Oregon trail in 5th grade. Now I am 32 and wondered what it would be like on computer. It was awesome! There were so many selections to chose from. To get the game going I got to chose from about 15 different characters. They were characters! During the game there were sayings above the character's image. When I clicked on the image the character came to life in a 10 second video clip offering tips to travel and humorous antidotes. Gathering around campfire avery night was where I traded and heard stories.

The trail took me through forests, deserts, through streams, and over mountains. Each new scene presented it's own set of challenges. Once I selected a choice; the animation took over and I went riding down a river or climbing over a mountain in life like virtual reality. Don't tip the wagon!

Along the way there were games within the game. I could hunt, fish, or search for vegetation. These "games" were a necessary part of the troup's survival. They were fun to play!. The fishing is done on a lake with a birds eye view. Each fish is a different size and color. Hunting was done in a wonderful panoramic 3D view of a mountain side. The animals moved and responded to gun shot like real animals. They fell down or ran away from me if I missed.(no blood) Gathering vegetation was as necessary as hunting. With the guide book I looked up various species of plants and selected ones that were edible. Very good lesson in botany.

The end of the game showed how much I had lost and how much land I had accumulated. A nice land survayer walked me through the process in grand old style.

Finally I would recommend this game for any history buff or game player. It kept me rivated for several nights. I got some beef jerky to make it truly authentic!

Get a wagon load and join the Trail! You'll be glad you came. It comes with two disks for days on the trail and hours of play.
