I've owned this player for about 6 months and have enjoyed it ever since! This DVD player is being called the BEST Budget DVD Player on the market in 2005! And boy, they weren't kidding. This Oppo Digital DVD Player has been compared with other DVD players priced at $2500 as being able to perform as well as the expensive guys!
The best thing about this DVD player is the fact that there is a processor chip in it. This chip produces an unbelievably life-like picture, even on older DVDs that have never been remastered! With the Oppo, you can change the picture settings on the DVD player to coincide with the picture settings on your TV to produce the best picture possible.
Hooking up the player via the HDMI out, which is how mine is set up, up-converts the signal from the standard 480p (which is the # of lines of resolution on DVDs) to 720p (the standard resoultion of High Definition.) Now, obviously this does not mean that your DVDs are suddenly in Hi-Def, but it creates a deep, saturated picture comparable to that of High Definition.
The Oppo Digital DVD player is even outfitted with a "hard drive" of sorts, that can be upgraded. Oppo owners who log onto their site at www.oppodigital.com can download software updates, burn them onto a CD, and insert them into the DVD player to update it! This helps with a few little bugs that you might experience with your player.
The overall look of the player itself is not only sleek and contemporary, but also functional. This player weighs virtually nothing and does not take up too much room on your shelves. Other people have criticized the Oppo's DVD drawer as being flimsy. What they don't understand is that this is how Oppo designed it. The reason it to make it bendable and flexible, without breaking. In fact, you would bend the drawer down to touch the shelf of your TV stand without any cracks or breaks.
The only problems with the player itself are currently being fixed with software updates. And those little problems consist of the player's display sometimes not working correctly. Please note that this will NOT effect playback in anyway. The other problem lies in the design of the remote. I would say that this is the big fault of the player. The remote is not backlit, and is rather small. The buttons are hard, and very difficult to read. However, replacing this remote (and all your remotes for that matter) with the Logitech Harmony remote will get rid of that problem all together. (The Logitech Harmony remote is the ONLY remote currently available to work with the Oppo DVD Player.)
All-in-all, if you're looking to dramatically improve the clarity of your DVDs and aren't looking to spend $3000 on a high-end DVD player, the Oppo Digital player is for you!
