Author's Review
Prince says it early on on one of the discs, warning listeners this is not the place to "get your Purple Rain on. That said, the 3 disc set does contain some hit songs from the past like "Take Me With U," "Raspberry Beret," and "Nothing Compares 2 U."
If you've ever been to a live Prince show, what happens to some of these songs will be no surprise. They are either interrupted with his mindless insistence on listening to the audience sing, or reduced to quick medleys. Also, dont let the track listing fool you. Disc 3 says "Peach" and "Girl & Boys" are on the album but really only a verse or a hook from the song is, while Prince and the band jam. The track listing on Disc 3 is simply a means for tracking the disc.
Most of the material on these discs stem from his "Rainbow Children" and "One Nite Alone" projects. You wont really find any unreleased material, but you will get to hear some newly updated versions of popular album tracks. "Anna Stesia" live blows away its studio counterpart on "LoveSexy." "Starfish & Coffee" is much improved over its "Sign of the Times" counterpart, but nether version holds a candle to the "Ohh, We, Ohh" original mix of the song heard on "Muppett's Tonight."
Disc 1 is very Jazz oriented, while Disc 2 is all about medleys, and Disc 3 "The Aftershow" is just one long jam. Prince live is always a treat, but this set will leave you wishing for an official release of "City Light's" a concert package from the early and mid 80's.
