Why this game has gotten mixed reviews
Date of Review: Sep 9, 2000
Okay, so Omikron got mixed reviews. I mean, before I picked up this game I went around to as many places as I could (not just Gamepro, but also Antaganist on AOL, Cheat Central, and a few others)... and the results were so mixed I had to see what the deal was.
Now, after playing it, I see why. This game is really going to appeal to some people, the world itself is huge and you can become a bunch of different characters (very cool), not to mention that it's in real time and you need to actually EAT (neat). Then, there's the music. It's so dark and gritty, even if you're not a David Bowie fan you can easily get into the mood of the game. Sure, everyone looks the same on the street... but this is a high tech conformist world, it makes sense that they all look the same.
Still though, the font is a little freaky, and the game doesn't let you do everything it should (why can't I sit down when I want to?). This plus the fact that you have to be in exactly the right position to do things is sometimes obnoxious (oh, I need to rotate 2 degrees to the left to operate the elevator?).
There are multiple plots you can follow... and you can pretty much just go off on your own, buy everything from sandwiches to penis implants. Some people don't really like the idea of being sucked through the playstation, or Kayl living his life (coming home to his wife at night etc), but to me this just simply adds to the game.
In fact, as I said if not for that font, and that inability to sit... this game would have been fantastic.
I've also heard a lot of people talk about the graphics of the game, how they are "mediocre", but try watching "What Dreams May Come" and then watching "Dark City". The game has less coloration because it's supposed to be dark. The bottom line is that, while the graphics won't stun you (like in Ecco), they won't diminish your enjoyment of the game either.
