Product Review

Affordable extreme pocket camera

by   shrike2000 ,   May 27, 2008

Pros:  Water/shock/freeze/crush proof is awesome! Great fun at bars.

Cons:  Heavy. Image details on preview. Slide show music.

The Bottom Line:  This cam is the standard for active people. The pictures are great, it's small, and it don't take no guff! You can also use it as a weapon.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought my 770SW about six months ago and I've taken it everywhere I go and dropped it, submerged it, and froze it in one or more of those places. My first outing with the cam was going snorkeling outside my hotel in the Caymans. I walked right out to the water with the strap on my wrist and the camera promptly slipped off my hand into the ocean. Fortunately I was able to find it after a panicked search, but being introduced to a con before I took my first picture was a bit disappointing. The camera is quite heavy and not at all buoyant. Anyway, I tied a knot in the strap and it stayed on my wrist the entire time. The depth gauge feature was really nice, but I'm sorry to say I wasn't able to go the full 33 feet down. I only made it to about 20 feet because, frankly, it was only 20 feet deep where I was.

Once back in the USA I took it with me wherever I went. The first time I dropped it was while waiting in a food court line at the local mall. It dropped from about four feet and hit the ground so solidly that I thought it might have broken a tile. It was like dropping a brick! Nice.

I spent quite a bit of time showing it off at bars, dunking it in water, beer, soda, and other liquids much to the astonishment of others. Taking a photo through a glass of beer requires a lot of thought, perhaps more thought than is possible when drinking beer. Still fun though.

These days I'm a bit more normal with it, taking it to the lake a lot and pretty much everywhere else. The small size and versatility combined with not having to worry about breaking it makes this the best camera I've owned.

The good: Of course the waterproof/shockproof/freezeproof/crushproof feature is pretty awesome! I love the look on people's faces when I jump into the lake with it in my hand. Very cool that when you zoom out in playback mode it eventually shows pictures in a calendar format. Best feature - I can take it anywhere. No worrying about being too rough.

The bad: Heavy. Does not float. In fact, anything that will give it the ability to float will be several times the size of the camera. The screen filling up with image details on the picture preview is annoying. I used to think the elevator music that played during the slide show was good, but now I'm not so sure. Showing off the waterproof feature in a glass of water is fun but carrying around a wet camera loses its appeal after a while.
