The Best Bang-for-the-Buck 8x42 in Existence

Date of Review: Jan 24, 2006

My occupation is describing sport optics and astronomical devices for a major retailer you may have heard of, and I've observed through more binoculars than many a gynecologist's tally of female patients.

The 8x42 Magellan are the least expensive waterproof & fogproof 8x42 made 100% in Japan that I'm aware of, and regardless of their country of origin they perform absolutely brilliantly for the price. I'm convinced they give 80% of the performance of the $1,000+ European flagships.

What does one get with the super costly binocs that you won't find in the Magellan? A bit wider viewing field, a smidgen better handling and less chromatic aberration at the edges of that aforementioned wider field.

But the Magellan does all pretty damn good. Close focus capacity is commendably short, eye relief plentiful, they're truly waterproof and withstand harsh temperature changes without being affected. They are my personal choice for a fullsize 'beater' binocular & I recommend them to my friends without hesitation.

Recommended to buy: Yes

Pros
Weight, build quality, center resolution.
Cons
Focusing dial's not identical in all climates & some chromatic aberration.
