Author's Review
This camera has been everything I hoped it would be. I admit, I don't particularly have a need for a waterproof camera, but I thought for those few occasions I would need it it would be fun. I do have a need for a shock proof, dust proof, and generally durable camera, however!
I work as a paleontologist, so I have many situations where I am in the dirt, mud, sand, salt, and anything else you can imagine. I've had several cameras freeze up on me, so I wanted something that would be durable. Additionally, I wanted something with a good macro setting, for getting up close to small objects with good lighting, good focus, and plenty of ability to change exposure, etc. This camera is easier to use than an SLR but takes comparable shots! In fact, for a camera-dunce like me, it takes better shots.
The zoom on this camera is not great, but that is a price you have to pay for the advantage of not having moving external parts for dust to catch in and water to get into. If you are looking for a camera with a good zoom, this is not it. I do, however, like to take artsy, close up shots of things like flowers and butterflies. I have taken these, blown them up, and used them as art in my home. Friends think they are professionally done.
Another note: I have the black version. It is so sleek and shiny I forget sometimes how durable it is. I end up babying it anyway.
