Author's Review
I've always been a big fan of Oakley sunglasses but never quite willing to pay the large sums they ask. So I was thrilled when my dad gave me a pair of Oakley Spike sunglasses that he won in an Oakley sponsored golf tournament.
At first glance you may think, "Wow, those look expensive", and you would be right. If you go to the Oakley website they are asking just over $200 for this particular model of sunglasses. Now, depending on who you are, $200 can seem like a lot of money to spend on just a pair of sunglasses, but when you think about it are they JUST a pair of sunglasses. These sunglasses will be protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. The very eyes through which you take in the world and all of its beauty. Can you really put a price on your vision? Now, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but before I go any further let me tell you why I think these sunglasses are great.
Frames: The SPIKE sunglasses first catch your attention with the sporty shape, and the glistening sheen of the titanium frame. They are lightweight and comfortable enough to wear as long as you please. Also, being titanium, they are very durable. I have actually dropped my pair a few times and every time I think "this is it, they are going to be in pieces for sure this time" but then I look down and it is as if they had never left my hands. And on the outside of the frame, just as it always is, there is that lovely Oakley logo embedded right into the titanium itself.
Lenses: The lenses on the SPIKE sunglasses are probably my favorite feature. I especially love the color. They are a sort of goldish brown color and give the world a very nice tint when looking through them. But even more important than that is that they have what Oakley calls a Plutonite lens material that blacks out 100% of UV rays. Also they are impact resistant and don't scratch easily (I should know). Another great thing about them is that the lenses extend pretty far to the side giving you a wide field of vision which I love in a pair of sunglasses.
Nose and Ear Padding: The nose piece on these glasses in pretty normal. Just the standard clear rubbery pads that are on any relatively nice pair of glasses. These pads adjust easily to whatever size of nose you may have. The ear padding on the other hand, Oakley seems to be quite proud of. To quote their website "Supple Unobtanium earsocks and nosebombs increase grip with perspiration". So i guess the nosepeice has this Unobtanium as well, but it seems pretty standard. Anyway, I don't pretend to know what Unobtanium is, all I know is it is squishy and comfortable.
Overall: Overall, I absolutely love these sunglasses. They are my favorite pair I've ever had. They look great, feel great, and do the thing they were made to do great...block out sunlight. I highly recommend getting a pair. The only downfall of these glasses is the high price. So along with highly recommending the sunglasses themselves, I also highly recommend getting a pair the same way I did...for Free.
