Author's Review
I've been using this unit for about 12 months now. I'd say I am an average user. Since I've purchased this, I've probably printed about 500-750 pages, scanned about 100 pages, sent half a dozen faxes (20-30 pages), and copied about 50-100 pages worth of material. I bought this guy because I was sick of paying a buck a page for faxes at OfficeMax.
I've never noticed any problems in all the time I've used it. I've had only a handful of paper jams, and those were all caused by bad paper as far as I can tell. The paper tray holds about 75 sheets comfortably and the tray design seems pretty basic and straight forward.
Print quality is average for an ink jet, but I've got to be honest, I've never taken a magnifying glass to the output or scrutinized it too closely. I've never tried printing photos with it, so I can't comment on it's performance if you decide to print the family vacation pictures on it. I imagine it will do them adequately.
It will do double sided prints, but it involves reloading pages after all the odd or even pages have printed first. Not a huge deal, but certainly not convenient for anything but basic print jobs. Of course if you're doing anything really fancy or out of the ordinary, I imagine you would have spent more for a higher end unit.
I've also printed 400 envelopes on this guy for a mailing list. But the paper tray will only hold about 8-10 envelopes at a time, so longer lists require a number of reloads. You can always opt for mailing labels if this bothers you.
I just refilled the black ink cartridge, so the included cartridge lasted for a year of moderate home use. I had no problems refilling the included black cartridge with a generic refill kit.
Speed is fairly good. I don't know what the specs are off the top of my head, but I don't ever remember getting impatient when printing 10-15 page docs out. It probably spits out a average page in 5-10 seconds. I often print in draft mode, and that appears to save a lot of time and ink.
The scanning/fax page feeder on top works fairly well, I've never had any problems with it. It isn't super accurate, but it works adequately for faxing. If you're looking to higher quality scans, you might want to do them one page at a time, otherwise alignment with the autofeeder might be an issue. Scanning can be a bit slow depending on your settings, but that's probably true in most lower end scanners even if they aren't part of an all-in-one unit. I've never really tried to push the autofeeder to see what it's capacity is, I've never had a problem putting about 10 pages at a time through it.
I have the printer installed and shared on my home network via a Windows XP machine and this setup has been easy to use from my other computers in the house. I would have loved it if this machine had an Ethernet port and built in network functionality, that way I wouldn't have to leave a machine on 24/7 just to connect the printer to my network. But the lack of this feature isn't a complaint, it's a request for the next model.
As pleased as I am with the printer, the included software is a different story.
The software is poorly organized and the installation process is confusing. The standard install puts so much crap on your machine, you loose track of what is installed and how it works together. However, if you choose not to install the software, you're not entirely sure if you are getting all the functionality out of the printer. I just wish all the functionality was included in one single package.
One plus with the software is if you install it, a small monitor program runs and detects/launches appropriate software when you press function buttons on the printer.
Overall, I'd definitely be able to recommend this printer to anyone looking for an all-in-one for light to moderate use.
