Bleeping For Your Country (Part 2): Notorious

by   George_Chabot , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Jul 5, 2007
Pros: Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, Story, Direction, Cinematography
Cons: Corny process shots - see review
The Bottom Line: One of my favorite Hitchcocks, Notorious pushes the envelope of female sexuality far beyond anything of its time and far more tastefully than anything after
Review: Notorious (1946) "The important drinking hasn't started yet." Alicia Hubermann Ingrid Bergman plays the dishonored daughter (Alicia Hubermann) of an unrepentant Nazi who is convicted of treason and then takes poison to avoid serving ...

Notorious: Hitchcock, Grant and Bergman create a true classic

by   mgreber ,  Jun 15, 2001
Pros: Great acting, cinematography and subtlety make this a suspense classic
Cons: This and other Hitchcock classics have inspired a lot of cinematic poop.
The Bottom Line: As classic suspense films go, it doesn't get much better than this -- this is Hitchcock, Grant and Bergman all in their prime.
Review: Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious is a classic suspense film, one that essentially serves as a primer for scores of directors and writers to copy in subsequent decades. With classic performances from Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains, and...

I've added "Notorious" to my list of playmates!

by   blade_runner83 ,  Oct 29, 2004
Pros: The depth and breadth of a quality cast. Taut, smooth direction. Wonderful rising suspense
Cons: Takes a while to get into gear.
The Bottom Line: "Notorious" is a masterfully directed and cunningly acted first-class picture that provides an intense romantic edge rarely replicated in Hitchcock's other pictures. An archetypal thriller.
Review: God Bless the “MacGuffin!” This most well known of director Alfred Hitchcock’s stylistic devices is the force thrusting us beyond the opening of Hitchcock’s 1945 classic “Notorious” starring Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant and Claude ...

Vintage Hitchcock

by   manhattan15 ,  May 30, 2000
Pros: fantastic story, beautiful cinematography, terrific cast
Cons: not a one
Review: Though I do love Vertigo and Rebecca I think Notorious must be my favorite Hitchcock film. It has everything: spies, Nazis, forbidden romance, not to mention a cast full of first rate actors. It's also one of the most beautiful films ever made. The...

One of the master's best

by   Daniel_Linehan ,  Jul 29, 2000
Pros: Gee, let's see...acting, directing, writing, cinematography. That about covers it.
Cons: If there are any, it takes a better viewer than I to see them.
Review: I admit, I feel unqualified somehow to criticize an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Ever since I saw Rear Window a year ago, I’ve been amazed by his talent, when in the service of a fairly ordinary plot (Strangers on a Train) and more so when he...

They don't make them like this anymore

by   KatScarlett ,  May 24, 2000
Pros: One of the greatest movies of all time
Cons: They don't make them like this anymore.
Review: I've been a Cary Grant fan going way way back. When I saw my first Cary Grant movie at around the age of thirteen or fourteen I immediately fell in love with him. He was everything that a man should be. Beautiful, charming, debonair, suave,...

Hitchcock, Grant and Bergman: The Perfect Combination

by   lskrzyniarz ,  Jun 26, 2000
Pros: Great cast, wonderful script, beautifully shot.
Cons: None that I can think of.
Review: NOTORIOUS isn't one of Hitchcock's more famous films, but it should be. It's one of my favorites, mainly due to the star power of Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. They never looked better and, thanks to Hitch, they have marvelous roles to play. One of his...

Cary Grant and Hitchcock at their best

by   Dani257 ,  Jan 19, 2000
Pros: Cary Grant at his dramatic best
Cons: None.
Review: Two of my favorite talents, Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock teamed before in Suspicion. The result was less than satisfactory. Cary Grant proved he could play a menacing character with just a few subtle changes in his established persona. He was still...

NOTORIOUS: A Hitchcock plot containing Nazis...

by   cripper , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Dec 8, 2002
Pros: Acting, direction, script, cinematography, editing
Cons: Notoriously poor score (no pun intended)
The Bottom Line: Yet another Hitchcock film I recommend.
Review: Many film watchers tend to forget about Alfred Hitchcock's films in the 1940s, which is mainly due to the success of his films in the 1950s and the early 1960s (most notably films like Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window and...

Notorious - Great Hitchcock Thriller

by   AliventiAsylum , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Jan 12, 2008
Pros: great acting, pace of film, good story
Cons: villain doesn't seem all that villainous
The Bottom Line: A great movie that showcases some great actors. If you've never seen it, you should.
Review: First released in 1946, Notorious built on the fears of Nazis following the Second World War where people were seeing Nazis and conspiracies everywhere. Surprisingly, that’s the one angle of the film that doesn’t hold up quite so ...
